I do adult shows as well as children's shows. Since I've been concentrating more on the former these past few years, I came to the sharp realization that I haven't upgraded the props in my children's show in several years. I've replaced stuff -- but not introduced anything new. I've done a steady business in family, library and festival markets.
I really enjoy performing for children. With a raft of shows coming up this Christmas, I decided to change up my show. So I spent a week or so looking over props, examining routines, reading reviews -- trying to figure out what is a good fit for me. In the end I ordered a V2 of the Smokey Mountain Pizza Box as well as the Dino Egg from Wolf. I still have $400 left in the "new stuff for Christmas shows" budget and was interested to know what you all are adding this year. Thank you all for your thoughts in advance. David

I would put it into efforts and time for advertising.
Although shows are up for this time of the year (and into 2013), my December holidaze season is not blazing hot. For me I am putting time into learning to site read music. I have played harmonica by ear for over 30 years, and guitar/ukulele by chord tabs for a while. How we spend our time is as important as the perfect new prop. My latest purchase was an electric / acoustic ukulele. Last night I was working on Silent Night. (originally written for a guitar) Harris aka drlaugh

Hi, Harris...
I am close to sold out for December. Every Saturday and Sunday has two -- sometimes three shows children's shows per day. Selling the shows isn't really an issue. Things are blazing hot here. And this isn't a "gosh I'm new to this" post. I was simply interested in discussing "what's new" with other performers. David PS I would love it if the guy doing my kids Christmas party ripped off a little "Smoke on the Water"...that sounds very cool.

One of my newest prop is Not Toxic by Bizarro.
Another is my Sharpie through anything. The first I use as a running gag. The second I use to talk about the teens I work with at school. I tie the prop into the "new" ear piercing called gauge. Harris

That's a wonderful idea, Mike...Made me smile AND chortle...
Not so sure about the manhandling of the kids -- but I love the effect. David

I'm in the same market as you for cool/new kid tricks. Will be fun to see what people suggest. |

I posted on the thread dedicated to this effect, but Tommy James' Lopsided Cyclops is both new and a lot of fun for everyone (and it won't break the bank).

I'm working on adding ventriloquism to my show. I plan to use 3 or 4 characters. I will add magic for each character. That's still makes it a magic show.

I'm adding "Presents of Mind" and Howzatt the clown. I'm retiring my "Forgetful Santa" - it's for sale.

Last year, I added Tommy James's Comedy Christmas Wand into my holiday show, along with an Gozinta Box set.
This year, I might add the Santa Silks (made by David Ginn), and possibly Linking Ropes in Colour. I also have a Temple Screen that I'm thinking of changing to a Christmas theme, as per the suggestions in Tony Daniel's DVD on Customizing Your Show. I already have these props and others, but they just aren't in the show yet. Other items on my "wish list", that I might possibly buy after December shows, is a new PA system (Mackie SRM 150), B Happie's Ultimate Control (show music control), Fairchild's Forgetful Frosty and Run Run Reindeer, Dazzling Magic's Professional Magic Painting, Test Tube Bunny and Crystal Silk Cylinder, and a new Chair Suspension (planning to get the model that Jay Leslie builds, to replace my current one). I've also got a couple of boxes coming from Creative Magic before the end of the year, which I'm sure will contain great surprises! One is coming in the next couple of weeks, and the other in December. I think there will be some big illusions in them, that could possibly be used for Santa's appearance... but I already have a couple of illusions for that purpose that work just fine. However, I'm still planning to keep them for now, and maybe put them into the show later on. - Donald

How many of you are using the SM Pop Gun ( http://www.smmagic.com/?p=332 )in your shows? It looks wonderful...

The Pop Gun is very fun. Gets good reactions. I've never had anyone complain about the whole 'gun' thing, as I do address the fact that we certainly can't use real guns. And, they see the ammo is a silk handkerchief before the gun is even brought out. The only thing I changed is using a silk that they initial with a sharpie rather than the tye-dyed one that comes with it, and they can take it home.
I used it last week in a show, and after it was over, a little girl came up and said, "You're probably going to say 'no', but can I have that pop-gun? It's way cool!" Doug |

The Pop Gun looks nice but I will never use any type of gun in Metro Detroit. There are so many murders happening using guns. In Detroit earlier this month there was over 30 murders in two weeks. I would not want to refresh anyone's mind about the killing of a friend/relative.

I just spent a day doing an inventory of my props. It's funny how MANY there are...and how that number just crept up...and how many things I purchased and very soon consigned to the "Drawer Of Stuff I'll Get To...One Of These Days."
And the funniest thing of all? How many of these forgotten props are actually very cool. I'm still curious, though...about what kinds of props you all are excited about using this season. Personally I'm utterly loving the Smoky Mountain Pizza Box...and to a slightly lesser extent (but still within the Way Cool standard) is the Dino Egg...only because it has a much younger appeal. Hope you all are booking up for Christmas...which is coming on like a freight train. David

On my agenda. Not tricks but instead working more on my puppets and a little bit of ventriloquism to add to my magic.
Have a number of wonderful puppets and do a few really nice routines that incorporate puppets and magic. My goal is to expand that a bit and become even better.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.
