Anyone know of any Japanese/Samurai themed effects that play well for kids? I can't do my karate themed show for this group, but I've had a request for these types of tricks.
Thanks! - Kevin |

How about something with kites, dragon silks, or chopsticks - and while rice bowls seems to be associated with China, it seems that if you use sushi rice, you could give the trick a Japanese flair. Also, check out Tenyo and Mikame and other great Japanese magic companies. They might have Japanese-themed tricks. How about a samurai card sword (get a card sword that could be described that way)? Some sort of mentalism trick involving guessing of Haiku . . . Tricks with goldfish (call them koi).

I believe there are a lot of onmyoji (japanese sorcerers) taking paper cutouts of people and animals and turning them into servants.
what if you told a short story, then animated a paper cutout; like in the floating butterfly trick. Or you could use it as a frame for Kevin James floating rose trick. What about a blindfold routine or precognition routine based on a martial arts situation? Many samurai where mikkyo practitioners looking develop super-normal powers to help in battle. How about a quick demonstration of hojojutsu (quick tying) followed by a comedy rope escape like Tony Clark's In and Out rope escape? A samurai card sword routine would be so cool! Especially if you know, or learn, any iaijutsu or basic kenjutsu and do just a couple quick moves before the routine itself.

Doc Hilford puts out a Samuri Sword Card Stab.
Don't know if it's still available?

"The Assassin Card Sword"
I don't think it's being made anymore, but I bet it's available somewhere.

Just wondering...
You have a karate themed show already? Wouldn't it just be easier to adapt that to be suitable for kids? |

I can't imagine any show with a weapon theme being suitable for kids. I don't think I understand the question.

Some of us mentioned a card sword, that diesn't seem inappropriate to me for a group of older kids. The question was a bit ambiguous though. Assuming the show isn't all set up yet it might be helpful to know -why no karate show -how old are the kids -what's the venue -What exactly do you mean by samurai theme? Japanese? Martial Arts? Day-in-the-life?

This could be quite educational and schools and libraries still do have some budgets for this.
I picture drumming, character education, tea and yes martial arts involved. I would first do lots of reading (or more if you have started) on this subject. Perhaps also involve Origami in the process. Though far from an expert, I have used things like Tai Chi(Yang style), board and brick breaking and tea both in and out of Dr. Laugh programs. Harris meditating on this and other matters...
