After peforming an impromptu trick, "Wow! How did you do that?" is a common reaction. How do you answer?

Sometimes I act surprised through all the effect, and if someone asks this question at the end, I just answer: "I don't know, it's amazing!"
Or, if it's an impossible looking but easy trick, I say something about perfect control and hours of training. They know I'm acting, but usually it ends the question with a smile, and I move on to another trick, or thank everybody and stop there. |

"If I told you...I'd have to kill you...."
What can be a funny way to handle this is to say, "Here let me show you something that totally explains it." You then do another trick that has absolutely nothing to do with the other. If they say, "How does that explain......" You say, "Hmmm...no it really didn't did it...I'll have to think about this." The above offers a nifty manner in which to introduce another routine and then a very logical move away from the original awkward question. Best,
Brad Burt

I really like that response Brad.
Far better than my standard cheeky grin followed by "Magic!". |

I like Brad's idea a lot.
When I've been asked that same question I redirect the question to another spectator. I turn to a different (and preferably speachless) spectator and just repeat the same question to them and say "how did I do that?" and prompt them for their own response which is really predicatable, and whats more is just the words you want to hear from your spectators themselves ... they nearly always say "It's magic!" or sometimes just "I don't know!". Either way the original enquiry has a valid response and you just leave it at that. Simples - just repeat the question to someone else to get the answer. |

"Can you keep a secret?" "So can I!"
The great trouble with magicians is the fact that they believe when they have bought a certain trick or piece of apparatus, and know the method or procedure, that they are full-fledged mystifiers. -- Harry Houdini

Brad's response is great... helps to keep the feeling of magic alive yet allows for distracting from recalling the how the previous effect was done. The distraction with another effect is great, especially if it's as strong or stronger than the first... Great!

I prefer to just say "demons." Gets huge laughs every time.

I always like to say: "I did it." With an expression that clearly states: duh.
