As a mentalist, here is one of my favorite game for Christmas... I pass my hand above the and I guess right all the contents ! Yes !
"If you draw a on this piece of paper and write on the back of the paper, in the square representing the inside of the packet, something you would like to offer to... me ! I will guess right what it is..." And I do it, each time ! They love this idea because so many of them would love to be able to do that on the night of Christmas. But at the end I say : in fact I am often disappointed not because of the gift but because there is no more surprise. That is the same with magic. You want to know how and when you know you regret ! Isn't it a nice metaphor ? Best, Fred |

That's an interesting idea to do on stage. Have some people wrap items in gifts and divine what they are by shaking and rattling them (under the guise that you discovered your gift for "sound reading" or some other nonsense doing this at an early age and are recreating it). The only problem is how to find out what's in it. Nothing else would make sense then to just call out what it is while you are shaking it and THEN open it up. Writing anything down wouldn't seem natural.

I'd guess you have to go for the one-step-ahead-technique. But as Jonathan said, writing anything down seems unnatural...
Got me thinking anyway... thanks Sincerly, Daniel Young

From your answer I realize that I didn't explain very well. There are no real packets in my presentation ! I tell the story about what I did every Christmas then I do a demonstration with only a piece of paper and a pen. It's a presentation I often use impromptu so I represent the packet by drawing it on a paper. it is far more natural than having a in my pocket always ready to present this effect !..
For a stage presentation I use a little variation : you know psychometry with these little bags from Lee Earle (thank you Mr Fogel...) ? I don't like very much these bags, they seem unnatural for me. So... I replace the bags with... Christmas socks ! You know, the big socks to put Christmas presents in it. I'm sure you guess the rest of the story... It's an effect really appreciated by the public because there is a context around the effect. It is more interesting than guessing who put a condom in the cute-specially-made-for-the-mentalist-little-black-bag... Fred PS: if you decide to adopt this idea, have a little a thought about me when you present it. In fact, at first, I didn't want to reveal this idea of presentation. |

Dang - Fred! I just finished praising another of your ideas and here you just spill your guts out! You're quite a creative guy!
These presentational ideas are great! It really gives a justification for having things wrapped up (real or imaginary) and associates it with something we all love. Terrific! /Matias |

Thank you Matias, you make me blush ! I'm always happy to share ideas with you all.
I have to recognize that the Peyotl was so good last night that I forgot to keep my little ideas for myself. Fortunately I fall asleep in front of my computer before I reveal the... No I don't say it ! Best, Fred |

I understand I was just trying to take the idea into something else. It got me thinking and that's what I was thinking. Do you call them packet's in France? In the U.S. we call them presents. And we call Christmas socks, stockings. We don't call our normal socks stockings...when anyone says stockings we immediatly think of christmas socks.

Perhaps using the box as a positioner for a center tear? Could you use the act of tearing it as "unwrapping" the present? How could that all tie together? What method do you use to divine what's on the other side of the present?

Jonathan : congratulations !.. Héhé ! The square which represent the inside of the present is perfect for center tear!.. It is how I found the idea of christmas presents, I was thinking about new presentations for the center tear. But there are other ways to discover what is writen on the other side of the paper...

Another idea would be to have a bunch of gifts containing different psychologically and subtly sound items, asking an audience member WHAT they want for christmas, and then NW their name onto the label. Could be fun. And there must be forces one could use.
If you wanted real gifts that is. /bamba |

You know what ? A few years ago my girlfriend forgot to remove the label price from the present ! No problem because I knew the price before I opened the present...
Actually I often guess right the prices. My friends are aware of that so they only offer expansive presents ! It's the only thing I can't figure out !... Fred |
