Just spent 4 days painting and aging 20 Kadar boxes, still not finished, then I have another week making the cards and putting it all together, then there is the actual writing of the book - a year working all this out and refining it. Then there is the many years of study that goes behind such work. Also, all my profits and a loan too is going into getting this stuff out, mainly for the love of it. All other dealers will empathise here.
So at the end of all of this hard work I will be left with 22 Kadar sets, all ready to post to customers who are sitting eagerly by their paypal buttons (as they should!). Then a worrying correlation occured to me. I have exactly 22 people on my close friends list, and another number of people in my playtester group. These are close friends who have helped me in the past, friends who I would normally give a freebie to. The problem is that this group of close freinds has grown to be bigger than my capacity to produce! So, I am going to have to take the stance of no freebie this time around. My playtesters will not expect this, as they know the work that has gone into the project, but to all my other friends out there, I still loves ya, but I really have got to sell these babies now or it is the poorhouse for me!

'apart from the love. I'm all for free love'
Well, I was just slipping on my 'protection'. I put this post up, as I find it a bit difficult saying to people that I have known for some time, that it would be really difficult for me to give my stuff away. This is because from their perspective that are the only friend I have, they do not turn around and see the ever lengthening line behind them. I put this up and thought the post was too weird and was about to pull it. But it is interesting that I have already had Dr Todd and Prf BC supporting it, and within the half hour two emails that indicate that I am not the only one with this rather embarrassing problem. I think there is a bigger problem that many performers will relate to here too, and it is the low financial status given to the arts. How many people here have booked in for a gig and found whoever booked them to be surprised that there was any payment involved. THere is an assumption that if you get you car fixed or your windows cleaned, that you get paid, but an assumption that if you are involved in the arts, then you are in some sort of charity organisation. I think this argument has been covered before in terms of performance and the anger expressed to those who perform for free and thereby contribute to the climate described. But of course it also applies to other areas of the arts. I have lost count of the times someone has asked me to 'knock up' a quick painting or graphic for them, assuming that it would take me 5 minutes, instead of a full day and cost them nothing because... well, the arts have such a low status in our society that it should be free. Imagine turning up for work and the boss says to you.... 'Hey, Clive, how long have we known each other now.... it must be coming up to six months, I would say we are pretty good friends now.... wouldn't you agree?' (CLive nods, but with caution) 'Well.... that is why I have decided to not pay you this month.' So, although this post seemed weird even to it's author, there is a bigger issue involved and we should all contribute to raising our art into a profession. In my early days,my glam-rock group never did one paid gig.... but we were sheet, so I am not counting that.

Christopher I hear you about paying for the arts.
I am also a musician and there has been a declining wage as a musician for years. The large night club venues have mostly closed and the smaller bars and venues are often populated with acts that play for free or very close to it. These acts are generally barely worth the effort to see for free. It seems a vicious circle of declining pay leading to declining quality of the acts. It used to be that you could not book your act unless you had some real talent and you did a lot of work to make your act something worth seeing. Lately it seems like some of the venues are just letting anyone on the stage regardless of talent or quality of the act. Keep up the good fight and keep building and refining your art. -Max |

Its funny, the stuff you produce are works of art. An original work of art, in the context of a gallery or exhibition, would cost 4 or 5 times what you charge for your wares. In the context of your art here, it is definately devalued.

In an age of 'instant downloads', file sharing, youtube and god knows what else, it behoves us to protect our art more than ever. You want Art?..... ...get Yer wallet out, I'm hungry! I am wondering about everyone's feelings about performing free when you are just starting out. Or should someone charge even a token amount?

Over the weekend I did a steampunk fair. I was offered a free table (£30 cost) for a 10 minute set, which I accepted. I did my single bizarre piece, upon which the organizer said 'is there anything else?'. I told them that I'd only agreed to do the 10 minute set and had run exactly to time because there were other acts performing. He said 'Oh, well you are already here, so I thought you'd have done some more, its not like it costs you anything' #SIGH#

Hi Chris,
Your props are far too good to be given as "Freebie". I know how much brain power and hard work you put into everything you create (Yes your props are creations of the highest degree)Those that buy your "Pieces" are buying art and still don't pay enough. I agree with you entirely NO MONEY NO DICE!! May you be blessed with many more years of creativity. Cheers Roni |

You can still give stuff away for free if you charge for it... Like the bouncer in a Liverpool club in the '80’s "give us a tenner, and I'll let yous in for notten"

What a wonderful group of professionals the spookies are! We know outstanding work when we see it, are willing to help refine it, and are willing to pay what it is rightfully worth!
