I've commented more elsewhere.
But this deserves to be mentioned here in Mentally Speaking. Great thinking, great effects, great story-telling. Highly recommended.

There are a couple of objects described in the text I'd love to make, if I had any crafting skill, the sphere with the ring in it in particular...suggestions?

My review of IM.
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ IMAGINARY MEDIUMSHIP – A REVIEW. In the last few days I’ve had the pleasure of reading Iain Dunford’s last work, ‘IMAGINARY MEDIUMSHIP plus other allied arts and studies’. The book is very pleasant and well-written; besides this it is an exceedingly clever text about séances, mediumship and psychic work. I mean: *REAL* psychic work. It’s a book in the class of the things by Paul Voodini and Neal Scryer, even if with a totally different style. *****The rationale***** Iain chooses to write under the alias of Edward Fairholme, grandson of a Professor Fairholme. This enables him to construct the text as a collection of notes, transcripts, letters by Fairholme and his friend Dr. Balgores, in which their researches into the occult side of the mind and related paranormal phenomena are vividly accounted for. This rich and interwoven set of narratives spans from the last years of 1800 to the Fifties. It describes faithfully that grey zone between the interest in occult studies and the positivistic attempts to study the boundaries between psychology and somethingother that many professionals with a medical background were involved in at the turn of the century. *****Structure and content***** This is NOT a book about effects (even if there are at least ten in it). This is a book about presentations –in part. This is, above anything, a book about a mood. Here one discovers how to present but also how to make credible via the narrative means what is definitely bizarre, scary and strange. The effects ARE there –but as in any good tale, the plot is way more interesting. You can imagine this book as ***the accounts made by querents of their encounters with true psychics*** (or: the spectator’s version of what has happened in an evening of psychic entertainment). Some of the effects are in fact explained and declared as such (i.e., as fraudulent mediumship techniques). Among these, The pendulum and the penny (p.8), Gin and games (p.49), Canto Stones (p.52), and the lovable An incomplete letter (p.70), which I adore. Others are not. But the man in the know will figure out what’s necessary to do in each case: Silent Q&A (p.19 -a real gem), Invitation & Sanctification (p.42 on), Animal séance (p.63 –I was grinning while reading that –don’t ask..), Two pennies, three pennies (p.74 –devious), and my personal preference, A rare party (p.85). *****Issues of style and attitude***** From the stylistic point of view, the book is voluntarily written with no order, either chronological or thematic. So, in the first pages we find some note relating to 1946 and 1952, and immediately after the narrative about an episode allegedly happened in 1901. This doesn’t detract from the experience, this timeshifting being nice, and adding to the amusement of the reader. Yes, because this IS an amusing book -in fact, this book can be read at three levels. 1-To the uninitiated, the narratives can offer the same flavour of some stories by M.R. James and of W.H. Hodgson’s Carnacki tales (less chilling, anyway). The book is a very good read also for those who don’t know anything about spiritism and related fields. Where technical books are always (also the best ones) *** boring, this book is *** pleasant. Some piece, like the Confession of a thirsty man (p.93), is definitely moving. And the effort made by Iain to replicate the different English linguistic registers of decades ago is very nice. 2-To the beginner mentalist: this book is a great one in giving a good idea of what ‘psychic entertainment’ can mean. This is not mainstream mentalism, but something quite different. At page 59, Iain offers one of the best analyses of which is the exact power of the psychics –all in the words of a witness, and in just 7 lines. If one wants to understand how to set the frame for a ‘true’ psychic experience, this book is perfect. 3- To the expert –that is, the one who is familiar with the techniques and knows what is necessary to know, in this book there are lots of ideas. Ideas, and directions, too. My advice is: don’t miss this book; the reward is very, very high.

I reckon it's about time for the dilettantes-without-a-life to come crawling out of their Roach Motels to accuse you all of trying to hype Iain's work.

I'm deeply sorry they will be disappointed in this hope).

The first five to PM me get free copies!
JOKING - I WILL IGNORE YOU IF YOU PM ME.... http://www.marketplaceofthemind.com/imagmedi.html I always send mine off for review to Jheff...that way anything that may appear to be either a friend being kind, or me or others being accused of hyping - at least you all have a second opinion... and if I could bribe Jheff, I would... and there's a very nice review by vernononcoins in the bizarre section, unsolicited and bought with his own hard earned coins... I freely admit to giving copies to my friends, cos...they are my friends... its, y'know....what friends do... generally, I am also ok with people thinking it might be hype - not my problem ultimately... though I would say - y'know those quotes you see on every single marketed product on a magic site? do you really think that person BOUGHT theirs? very, very rarely does that happen...so, well...get over it...

Nah sorry sir... I only do physical editions these days... not necessarily for pirate fears, but because of the pleasure of owning/creating a proper physical book...
plus, its a series of short stories, to hopefully be enjoyed as such - before the mentalism and bizarre routines leak out from the tales... eurgh...a leaking tale...no one wants that... though - I can offer a bespoke ecopy I suppose, if people buy a proper copy, and then send me their paypal receipt...

Looks like all of Iain's books (save the new one) are on sale. While I agree with all of the above statements, I'd like to recommend the Corpus Compendium for those who don't have any of his material. Tons of great material, especially if you do readings.

Aw thanks guys - that's very touching actually...thank you...
though its not on at a discount, if you did enjoy the readings side of things, then Tarography has a secret group on Facebook you can access if you purchase the book (you have to apply to join etc) - so you get to share and chat about your tarographical uses behind closed doors if you so wish.. as well as swop ideas...and I post up newer shots you're welcome to download too... there's a review of it in this section a little further down...
