Hey Guys and Gals,
I have a few family shows coming up at Halloween Events. Any suggestions for taking the classic kid effects and twisting them to be Halloween themed effects? When I say Classics I mean Fraidy Cat Rabbit; Dove Pan; Stratosphere; etc. OR are there any economical Halloween kid effects out there? Thanks! |

Not to plug my own material, but since it is free I don't feel too guilty. Search on YouTube for "Christopher T. Magician Presents." Click on episode 2 (which is in two parts. The entire two part episode is dedicated to ideas for Halloween shows. At least a few of the routines can be made with no special magic apparatus at all. Hope the video helps.
Also, just off the top of my head a dove pan can easily be worked into a routine where you add ingredients to make a witch's brew. (The video has a routine you can adapt to this). - Christopher |

You can have a candy raffle with a big bag of candy - I read this somewhere on the Café and put it in my show with great success. All you need is a mesh force bag and some papers with numbers written on them. You can let whomever you want win - for a birthday show the birthday kid wins, for a public show we had (3) adults and one small kid come up and play. Of course the kid won.

I have to let you know about Tommy James' Comeback Spider. It is easy to learn and plays huge! Watch his video demonstration. The reactions I get are identical. He has other effects that work extremely well for Halloween as well as a Hallowen DVD. I cannot recommend his material high enough. If you use his effects, you will get great audience reactions.

Learn teh routine and you will get the same results. If your gonna buy kids show magic get on Tommy James website and buy one of everything. |

It should be last because it helps prevents children from choking while laughing at a trick during your performance. Plus it can distract from the show, so do it last. |

Spellbinder is struggling to complete The Wizards' Journal #24 which is 100% Halloween effects, most of which use items obtained from party goods stores or on-line from Oriental Trading Company. He got about half way through and discovered that variations of the exact same effects can also be themed for Christmas, and probably other holidays as well, so you won't be limiting yourself to Halloween by checking it out. My favorite is a recreation of an old (1920s) Doc Nixon trick called "Oh Joker" which he has redone and renamed "Oh Dracula!" It turns out that can also be "Oh Santa!" or "Oh Easter Bunny!" or even "Oh Uncle Sam!" with a little retouching of the props.

Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki ran out of time on filling up his Wizards' Journal #23, so he and Spellbinder collaborated on it, with Spellbinder doing most of the work because he has nothing but time on his hands these days. Their "Halloween Punch Recipe Book" collaboration is almost an entire show in itself. The book starts off as all black blank pages bound together as a book. Then when a helper holds the book, a cover appears on the outside. One by one pages begin to appear inside the book (it is NOT a coloring book, but something different). Each page has a different part of the recipe to make a Witches Brew and you do magic with the various ingredients, such as a multiplying ball effect with the eyeballs that appear, and so on. When the book is completely filled in with the recipe, the punch bowl which is now filled with inky black punch is covered with the tablecloth and tossed into the air to disappear, liquid and all, as a finale. If interested, you now know where to find it.

Here you go LM:
Halloween Episode Part 1- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na12EPwgeZE Halloween Episode Part 2- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p2KT6HLH6E Also, any trick like Fraidy Cat Rabbit, Hippity Hop Rabbits, Jolly Polly, Farmyard Frolics (and on and on) ... basically any trick involving a picture of something can be presented as a picture of your halloween costume for the year. Fraidy Cat Rabbit can be a picture of your upcoming halloween costume but you can't decide if you're going to be a white rabbit or black rabbit. Finally in the end show the backside of the rabbit. And ditto on the Tommy James DVD. I love his DVDs and can't wait for his Birthday one coming out. - Christopher |
