We do a lot of it to ourselves. Take a good look around the next time you're at a magic convention. There are some strange rangers at those things. Why? It's because when people discover they don't have the chops or discipline to learn another art form like music or painting, they decide "I can do magic. That doesn't take any skill or practice at all. Anyone can do it." It's not true, but it's what we claim in our trade publications and advertising for effects. We don't police our own art form enough.
