I swear....these "world-is-ending-soon" nuts just never give up! After this falls through, theyll simply switch to the Inca calander or something. If the Mayans, or any OTHER lost civilization really had this sort of prophetic power, They wouldnt be LOST!! Theyd be the dominant power in Mexico, or all North America!! If a Mayan priest were to be transported to the present, and we told him that we had predicted the world would end based on the fact that their calander-tablet ended this year, the Mayan would look at us like we were the idiots we are for a mommnet, then he'd say (through snickers) "Guys....turn the tablet OVER!!"

As a pastor I love to talk about Christ at Christmas. But I always check with the client to see what the expectations are.
Normally if it is a non-church event, it is a secular holiday show with Santa, Reindeer, etc. If it is at the church, of course it incorporates the gift of the Christ Child. I have never had a complaint yet about the Holiday Shows. I am very conscious about delivering what the person expects who hires me. However, that being said, I also do not hide the fact I am a pastor, but I don't necessarily emphasize it either at secular events.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

I have no problem performing a Christmas and a Hanukkah holiday show exactly as the client wishes me to perform it, changing the words to fit the occasion.
I will not perform a Halloween show with a Halloween theme for any reason, or any amount of money. In fact last week I received a bid from GM about performing a Halloween show at a Christian church!!! I turned it down, and if I did have a phone number I would have called and asked what they are thinking |

Samhain, the original Celtic holiday on which Halloween is loosely based was more or less their New Years celebration with a focus on giving thanks for the harvest with ancestor worship thrown in for good measure. All the emphasis on Devils, demons, ghosts and ghoulies are later additions put in place by later celebrants. Satan after all is a Christian creation. The pagans have no such Deity. I'll be doing my Halloween show tomorrow at Egan's Jam house in Ballard. It is a celebration of the works of Edgar Allan Poe. It's a Delightful blend of Mirth and Macabre and a way to celebrate Halloween without drawing on occult themes.

Okay, first to Professor Payne:
No such deity specificaly named 'Satan' perhaps, but every religion, pagan or otherwise, has some representation of evil sprit(s). All Hallows eve was never a celebrated christian holiday, but it was basicly the day on which the saint-feasting calander ended, and as such it seemed rather 'godless' so it acquired a reputation as the day on which a lot of bad things could happen. Then yes, it got mixed up with Samhain, which is the day on which the dead can return, looking for payback on whoever offed them. So if you were brave / stupid enough to go out at night on allhallow'seve, you'd want to be disguised as something non-mortal. To Howie: You should be HAPPY that there are Halloween parties....they demonstrate how weak satan has become. Halloween used to be the most feared day on the calander, and today it's a time of children's frolic! To all the RATIONAL people in here: We all know of course that all halloween really is is a conspiracy by the candy companies!

Halloween is All-Hallows'-Eve which is the night-before-All-Saints'- Day. Some tell me they understand that Halloween pranks were a post-Reformation contribution to plague Catholics who kept the vigil of All Saints. Now it is possible that Halloween was abused for such a purpose; nevertheless, during all the Christian centuries up until the simplification of the Church calendar in 1956, it was a liturgical vigil in its own right and thus has a reason for being. All Hallows Eve is a Holiday that for centuries was observed by the Catholic Church.

All Hallow's Eve, All Saints' (Hallows) Day and All Souls' Day were for generations christian celebrations,as Payne has pointed out. They have been celebrated for well over a thousand years.

Payne; what you are doing is performing a Halloween show at an event that is a celebration of the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
A modern day party celebrating Halloween is Satanic and you are correct, all the emphasis on Devils, demons, ghosts and ghoulish are later additions put in place by later celebrants; the Halloween of today is a celebration of Satan It doesn’t matter how it evolved it is a fact |

Halloween has nothing to do with the fictional Satan. It is all hallows eve, about as opposite to Satan as it is possible to get.

What does this have to do with Kids shows? If it's God we're discussing, God will judge us all no matter what any of us here believe. If it's magic for kids we're discussing, if kids don't get bombarded with Christmas from your magic show, then they will get bombarded with it from every form of media possible from the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas Day. Both Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays are both acceptible phrases in the American culture at large so you should be okay. I never understood what the big deal is.
FYI: The word "Holiday" means "Holy Day." |

Everything in these parts seems to jump from Halloween directly into Christmas\Solstice\Winter Holiday\whateverelseyoudecidetocallitday. Some stores stick a few turkey, pilgrim, or cornucopia decorations around the leftover pumpkins in an attempt to reduce their Halloween inventory. But the major focus is definitely on Holiday trees and decorations and convincing the great unwashed to spend more money than they have on trinkets and toys in tribute to the god(s) of consumption and consumerism.
