Check out the Voodoo Museum, the Dungeon, and the street performers in Jackson Square. |

I've never been to New Orleans but this topic (and the other Dr. Mojo linked to) have planted an idea that may come to something. The Voodoo museum would be interesting and I'm curious about the street performers. Any magicicians there?

Contact my friend Joe (acecardician) here on the Café and he can certainly give you the lowdown on fun and magical things to do while there.

Between this and the other Thread almost everything was mentioned.
New Years Eve there are always fireworks on the river. Everyone has their favorites, 2 of my favorite excellent white tablecloth Restaurants are "The Pelican Club" and "G.W. Fins". Both are in the Quarter. If you can sneak in the Riverside Hilton's main ballroom, I will performing at a private party there until midnight on New Years Eve.. If you are in town any Monday, "The Nights of Sleights" meets every Monday at the West bank Applebees. A famous card guy with the initials Jon R. who wrote lots of books on cards usually holds court there. Other known magicians pop in there from time to time when they are in town. If you do not have a rental car, take a taxi there. You can probably catch a ride back if anyone is heading back your way. I am not sure if we are meeting on New Years eve Monday. Keep your eyes open for a parade. Parades can be any day of the week, all one needs is the permit(payoff, just joking)). So they pop up all the time for any reason. For the permit, you get a police escort and they block the street off for you. I have performed juggling in many parades like this that corporate visitors put on. 2 weeks ago I brought my Granddaughter to the Quarter. We rode the free Ferry to Algiers point and back, then we took the Riverside Streetcar from the Hilton to the end of the line by the Old Mint at Esplanade. Right there is the beginning of the open air Farmers Market and Flea Market. Best place to get souvenirs. They do like to barter. Sometimes you can find things for magical use. We walked back up Decatur Street shopping at the market and little shops along the way. ( There is a vintage toy store in the Square that has things you can use for magic), Then we went to Café du monde for beignets and hot chocolate. I would recommend the Coffee. Then we walked the Square. We caught 2 magic shows and a contact juggler, I taught my grand-kid to TIP them. I bought a book from one of the guys on "Street Performers in New Orleans". Then we walked back to Decatur Street and Caught the Veterans Day Parade. then we ate at Café Masperos, they are generous with their food. We looked around the Jax Brewery, now a mall. My Great Uncle used to be a Brew master there when it was a Brewery. I still have one of his lapel pins that say "25 years of service" with the Jax logo. Tip: the Jax has fairly clean restrooms that are open to the public. Our car was parked behind the seawall on the River. I bought an all day pass for $5 at the Riverboat Natchez office. To end the day we saw swarms of birds grouping and re-grouping before dark. They finally vanished behind the buildings of the Quarter and we went home.

New Orleans has so much to offer, it is hard to do it all in one visit. Have an idea of what you want to do, and do not worry if you do not get it all done. You can always come back. I think each person finds their own unique New Orleans visit of what they discover and like to do. There is something for everyone!
Try a little bit of everything, and when you come back try more. Once you find the things you like that are unique for you, you can plan a visit and do just your favorite things, right Steve? And I think Napoleon house has the best muffalettas! They serve them warm! And they usually have fresh mint leave for ice tea or a mint julep!

I just found out we have reservations at Muriel's on New Years day. It is in the corner of Jackson Square, and the balcony overlooks the square, a great place to have cocktails in the afternoon and watch everything going on from above:
http://www.muriels.com/ When I go with my lady, we usually order several appetizers and that is plenty. She booked it. It is a special holiday menu. I look forward to it. The place is haunted. They put out bread and wine and light a candle under the Stairs everyday to please the ghosts. At one time they said it was an orphanage. They have a wall in the hall upstairs painted Gold, and no matter how may times they paint over it, child hand prints come up through the paint. http://www.muriels.com/html/ghost.html The Gumbo there is to KILL for.
