I notice a lot of these fine quality sets for sale lately and am wondering why. Is it simple economics or buyers remorse? I sold a couple sets simply because I got them in trade or second hand and decided to go with Morgans and Walking Liberties only (with matching centavos and english pennies all from Johnson sets as well as some Johnson Hong Kong Coins). I am just wondering since I know it is not a quality problem that makes people sell them at a loss. Sometimes a pretty good loss. Do people buy the sets before knowing the routines and find them too hard to perform? Do they get them and not use them as much as they thought they would and rethink the justification of the price they paid when maybe a Johnson set would do the same? Personally, I love My Lassen set, I love My Mogar sets and My NGF's from Mark Mason - Triception in walkers and a Morgan NGF on the way. And my Johnson Walking Liberty sets have not failed me in 15+ years. No disrepect to the makers but what do others think the reasons are that so many pop up each week in the sale forum?

I had a Lassen Triple Threat...I traded it with bowers on here because I never used it. I prefer a shell and flipper personally to show 3 coins...I understand that the TT shows 3 singularly but I just never used it...why let it go to waste!

Just my opinion, but this is a tough time to be selling magic right now. Tight economy. Good opportunity for buyers, though.

I think people like myself love a nice silver set of coins. but are so scared to use them in performence because of dropping them and damaging them.you have so much invested in them you can't afford to mess them up.just my opinon.i have some nice sets.but most of the time take a clad set to perform with.im glad lassen is making clad sets now. you still get the same quality but don't have to worry about them so much.

I have some sets but don't use them much really like a lot of people I suppose. These new clad sets are a nice option for sure, still maybe a little more expensive than I would like but definitely a nice chunk of change removed from the bottom-line. When I became able to better pay for all these sets, I also began sharpening my SOH and as such never went the way of getting many more sets that I didn't think I would use any more than the sets I've accumulated.
The silver stuff is very nice but can be tremendously expensive and after a while I believe your more so just collecting them than really doing much magic with these things. I have a beautiful set of soft Morgans with a matching [, handmade not by Lassen or Schoolcraft but still very well done by a talented friend from right here on the Café. I think a lot of people would love his truly affordable work. I play with them sometimes but find myself much more so simply admiring the craftsmanship and then gently putting them away. When I do dollar size coins, I typically use the old worn down Morgans my Grandpa gave me long ago. I've gotten good enough now not to drop them much but if I do, it's just one more nick on an old coin that has plenty of them already. No blood, no foul. I have a Johnson half dollar shell and a C/S half I've been happy with for some time now, and though my eyes get bigger than my stomach at times with all the trinkets out there, somehow I've seemingly refrained and after a few days I'm always happy I did. To be clear, these gaff sets are really nice and hard to resist, and actually the use of them with SOH is the best of both worlds. It's all fun stuff either which way with loads of good magic to it. I've always admired the guys that kill with CSB sets, [s, etc. Loads of wonderful magic in those classic works as is the newer stuff out there like these TTs, magnetic sets, etc. It's all good, glad to have done a bit of both to some good degree.

I've got a Lassen gravity flipper up for sale currently because I want to buy a soft morgan set with an expanded shell, and that's the only way I can realistically afford it. I have 2 and can part with it for something I don't already have. Otherwise would keep it for sure.

Maybe it's because people now realise that as the Tango Ultimate Coin (TUC) is such a great utility gaff, it does around 90% of what a full range of other gaffed coins do?
If you are a collector/hobbyist, then fine. However, if all you want to keep is what you actually USE commercially, it's probably wiser to have the money in the bank earning interest. That's certainly why I cleared out most of my gaffs last Summer, and I've never looked back. Just a personal opinion of course.

Barry...I've...got....A MORGAN TUC!!!!! (don't hit me!)
Seriously, though, I have a number of Lassen items, and while I love the craftsmanship, it is the sheer beauty of the coins that makes me love performing with them, and (I believe) gives an extra bit of interest or beauty for those I perform for. I prefer shiny, non-worn Morgan Dollars, and I have a couple of effect that combine those with beautiful, dark copper crowns (never were legal tender, Lassen minted these himself). I have a copper "sam" and do a dollar/crown transpo, and it is just gorgeous...to me. Not a lot of people manufacture items like this in Morgan Dollars/Crowns, etc... Lassen is one of the few. We all have our reasons "to" and "not to". My reasons "to" are no more valid than someone else's reasons "not to".
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

They are also very similar quality to an uncirculated Morgan. I cant tell the difference when I mix mine up until I use a magnet or inspect them side by side for thickness. I believe Bowers has his by now too and maybe he will chime in, I know he recently ordered a set. Joe also makes Sliding ['s for them for about $85

I recently sold a Lassen English Penny Sh**l set. It is a beautiful set. I sold it because I have 5 other Lassen shell sets, and never used the English Penny set. I used the proceeds from that sale to help pay for another prop I wanted.
I agree that I accumulated a lot of high end gaffs as a sort of collection, but as time goes by I realize that these sets would be better off in the hands of someone who will create magic with them. I have sold a number of Lassen gaff sets through the years and have always received what I paid for them when selling. These sets truly hold their value. Sammy

Perhaps the root of this is folks keep looking for "THE" prop, as connected to in search of the perfect "high".
Many of us have got into buying the next thing. Some like me have "higher" dollar prop addiction. Over the years it is easier to find out what I will use, than back in the 70's when I began my magical journey. I also wait and don't impulse buy as often. Example took me 2 years to decide to buy an upscale electric ukulele. Do I use it plugged in often? No, but it sure comes in handy when I do. I still use the Lassen items I purchased 10 - 15 years ago. Every day..no, but I am glad I did not sell them. (I did have the thought)

Hey Todd -
These morgens sounds great, but I couldn't find them on Joe's site. Did you reach out to him directly to get them? Did he happen to mention if he had any sets that were on the "softer" side? Hope you are well. Thanks, Rob |
