I can't think of a better place on the forum to post this as anyone interested in "Grand Illusion" nowadays is likely to have been influenced by him. These are my personal videos of after-show ("after the show") autograph sessions with David Copperfield. The earliest would be the first time I saw him live which was after his Bermuda Triangle special (makes it sometime in 1989 I guess). I was 14 yrs old.

I can remember sitting patiently until we were last to meet him so I could get a photo of David and my wife together. He was very gracious to give this time to meet people and always stayed to the very last person.

And now... at the MGM.. the VIP meet and greet is over a hundred dollars more than the "regular" ticket prices for the show.
However.. I saw it this past Thursday night.. and it was AWSOME. I saw Lottery for the first time.. and he has a new prediction trick where he sends an email to everyone who participates cell phone.. and it blew my mind. |

He was very nice to me when I met him back in 2003.

So true. He would always stay till the very last...and always seemed genuinely happy to do so.

Makeup guy, that mobile phone trick was an app available to anyone just a couple of months ago, but Copperfield bought exclusive rights, so it got pulled from the market. A few lucky peeps had it for about a month or two, but even they can't do it now.

I worked his show as a stagehand in the 90's at Barbara B. Mann Hall in Ft Myers, Florida. Nice guy. Real quiet, and low-key. Even after I was fired when I had a run-in with his stage director, David apologized for him and wished me luck!
I never even considered an autograph! Dumb, dumb, DUMB! Oh well. Doug |

I saw teh show too in Vegas a week ago last Tuesday night. It was a really good show those many of the tricks were retreads but you are right the Lotto trick was great as was the Cell Phone/Email trick that you start right before the show. Really cool the way he incorporated the this now everyday technology into a trick and his show. Very clever. As I said I thought the show was Good but not great as many of the tricks were retreads. His last trick was one that my wife was a part of (making 12 or so audience members dissapear at one time) some 10-15 years ago. I also think he was somewhat under the weather which may have had something to do with what seemed like to me he was just walking through the motions. Still good though. Just my opinion.

Did they get their money back? Just curious....that doesn't sound too fair if they all got screwed after buying the trick. |

I got an autograph in 72. He sat by himself at a small podium in the lobby.

Probably not. Maybe it was 77, 79, 76 or 78. I didn't take notes. I was in HS and that was possibly his first national tour. I don't remember any routines. just that he sat behind a very small podium within handshaking distance and he was personable.
When you get as old and rickety as I'm getting just remember two words of advice "Don't get old". That's it, two words.

When we were all much younger back In 1985 I saw him live for the first time in Orlando. The show was fantastic and he made himself available to anyone in the audience after the show for autographs and photos with him. I had just spent an afternoon with Derek Dingle in New York and had his autograph in a notebook and had Copperfield sign on the opposite page. When he saw Dingle's signature he chatted briefly with me about him. It took him about an hour and a half to see everyone that wanted to have their moment with him after the show.
I saw him again some years later and he again signed autographs at the end of the show but this time he was sat up on a small platform away from the line of people with music playing loudly from a beatbox type player. Your autograph book or program was passed to him by a minder so you couldn't pose for a photo with him or talk to him. On this occasion I had him sign the magic convention program that I was in town to attend in Raleigh North Carolina. He called me over to briefly ask about it and mentioned that he was friends with David Williamson who was one of the feature artists mentioned in the convention program. Although this was far less personal than when I saw him in 1985 I think it's understandable and still give him credit for doing it. I next saw him at the 15,000 seat venue at Earl's Court in London and he shamefully didn't have any arrangement in place for us all 15,000 of us to get personal autographs and pose for photos with him at the end of the show. (and because this is the Café I know I have to point out the intended verbal irony in my last sentence )

Before his show a couple years ago, when I was in 5th grade, my mother persuaded me to send one of my business cards backstage with one of his stage hands to maybe get it signed. Right before the curtain rose, the stage hand came back with the card signed! Not only that, but she moved my mother and I from our back row seats to the very front row... free of charge! Following the show I got to meet him and noticed (like many have said in this thread) that he was a very humble, quiet, nice guy. This was one of the best nights of my life.

W_s, yes, everyone who'd bought it was informed that it would no longer operate after a certain date. I assume, but don't know for certain, that they received a refund. The app originally was $200.

Oh ok, we'll I guess if they all knew there was an end date on the product before they bought it then that was totally fair. Thanks for replying!

Back in 93 I waited outside the back doors of the theater hoping to meet him outside of just autographs. Next thing you know, Don Wayne exits the bus door and begins to talk to me. I think he was a bit shocked I recognized and knew a lot about him. I explained to Don how I was using his dancing hank and the different ideas I incorporated. Impressed enough, Don took me through the back doors and to Davids dressing room lounge where we had a twenty minute magic talk session. During the autograph session later as I was towards the end of the line, David halted the line, got out of his chair, walked over to me and thanked me for the talk earlier. I personally believed he saw I had a date and knew how impressed she would be by giving me the personal time of day. I was made to feel very special in that room and perhaps look special to those watching. After that night, I realized the impact you could have by treating people individually and with full personal attention after a show. It can be a special momment for them!
David was always generous in his younger years...seems he changed a bit as he began to become more of a celebrity due to his personal life and status. Its understandable as more people want a piece of your time. I heard he's kinda gone back to being a bit more personal like in his younger years...although its much harder to get in front of him, when you do, he doesn't portray himself so much of a celebrity like he did for a number of years in the 90s. |

W_s, no, they did not know the app would be reclaimed from them when they bought it. They had purchased it before Copperfield became interested. It was only after he bought exclusive rights that they were told it would no longer work for them.
