About 20 years ago my brother got a call from a local limo service here in town to drive David and his manager to and from his show here in town. After the show the plan was to pick him up around 10:30. David stayed late and was not ready to leave until about 12:30 in the morning. David told my brother several times how sorry he was that he had to wait for him, and he told David no problem, and that he thought he was great that he took the time to speak with all his fans after the show.
Anyway, David wanted to go eat somewhere before he headed back to the motel. They were driving all over, trying to find a place that was still open. David mentioned that any place would do, even a Denny's would be fine. My Brother responded that they was not one on the end of town they were in, all of a sudden David said in a deep magical type voice, " Look to your left ", my Brother looked and they was a Denny's that had just been built a short time ago that my brother had forgot all about! Then David, his manager and my brother erupted in laughter, it was like he magically made the Denny's appear out of nowhere. When they pulled into the parking lot David tried his best to get my brother to join them for dinner, but he had to stay with the car. At the end of the night my brother ended up with a $100.00 tip. I met him years ago at Disney's Pleasure Island and gave him a backstage tour of the now defunct, Adventurers' Club. He was very nice and acted like a little kid, asking to see how everything worked. We had a shipwreck in a bottle (pepper's ghost), disembodied head (mirror wall) and an organ that took requests. After that he signed a playing card for me before disappering into the night.

Wow, what a pleasure reading everyone's experience of meeting him. Thanks all for posting. I always thought it was a special thing he did, meeting the entire audience personally after EVERY show, and this is when he was doing over 2 (or more ) shows a night, more than 500 shows a year, on the road. I am curious if there are any other videos like mine out there anywhere.

I'll never forget the first time I met David. It was at the best magic convention that I have ever been to, year to date.
It was in 1980 and was the Joe Stevens Convention called Magic Conclave. I believe that was the name I would like to know the month and dates if anyone knows. I was just a kid.. It was in Witchita, Kansas and it was a great convention. The headliners of the convention to the best of my memory was, Tomsoni, Mr Electric and David Copperfield. What was so cool about this convention was that David was just starting to be a big star and he was accessible at this convention. I remember him walking with everyone else from the hotel to the theater to watch the other shows.. He always had a nice looking lady in arm.. A short haired brunette. We would all hang out with him in the big confrence rooms, parties and ever big parties in hotel suites.. Not to mention that he was the closing act headliner of the main show.. He performed stuff like the Back Stage with the magician as his intro.. Doing card manip he did the dancing zig zag with the wedding dress type painting.. The dancing hanks, the attic sceen.. and I think that he closed with a lions bride and produced the shaggy Da type dogs.. I was setting next to the guy that he rented the dog from.. I got to take photos with him a number of times thru out the convention.. The best part of the entire convention was when he did an interview with the audience. He sat center stage on a chair and did a 1 to 2 hour interview with Q and A with the audience. it was the best that I have ever seen. My second encounter with Copperfield was even better.
My father started calling Copperfield's people and was trying to get some one on one time with him as kind of a mentor for me as a kid. My father has always been a great business man in the real estate industry. So David to decided to hang out with my dad for a few hours about business and meet the kid.. So we got to fly out to Reno on March 29th 1981 and drove to Lake Tahoe to watch David's show and meet with him privately. I remember it snowing and being very cold. Copperfield was at the Caesars Palace and the Bill board said. The Magic Of David Copperfield... Just a few doors down was Doug Henning performing at the Sahara Hotel and the Billboard said Doug Henning's World Of Magic.. We felt very special to be able to be special guest of Mr Copperfield. Comp tickets and the special treatment. So we watched the show.. To the best of my memory.. He opened by driving on in the red Ferrari, he performed stuff such as. The dancing hank act that he was doing at the time on ever TV show you would watch.. He did the Attic sceen illusion (The original version.) He closed with the Levitation vanish of the car.. this is the main stuff I remember.. Room service and the albums.. So after the show.. The same short haired brunette girl escourted my father and I to David's back stage Suite. we sat down on a large leather coutch. there were two coutches that faces each other.. She said David is cleaning up and will be with you in a while... we waited around 30 min. then the door opened and David walked in. He had just taken a shower after the show. So we talked with him for seems like what must have been 2 t 4 hours.. he talked to my father a lot about real estate investments and we talked about magic and Henning being down the road and all kinds of great stuff.. But what I remember the most is how casual he was. He was very laid back and soft spoken and a very calm and collective person that was in no hurry it seems to rush us on out.. Very nice man. When it was time to go.. He asked if we wanted to walk with him to the front desk to get his mail. We said yes of course.. As we walked thru the casino it must have been 4 in the morning and they were cleaning up the casino. Hardly anyone was in the casino at that hour. He was walking thru the casion with no shoes. He said that he hadn't left the casino in 2 months and hadn't really even been outside. Talk about being devoted... No wonder why he has always been the best. So we went our seperate ways... My Father said, do you want to stay an extra day and watch Henning or go to Vegas and see Seigfreid and Roy.. See my dad is a big gambler and loves Vegas.. I said Siegfried and Roy. ( Whic I have a equily as cool story about them..) I was a big S and R fan, so I said Vegas.. now I regret not going to see Henning that time... I know that I could have meet him with a DAD like I have... So I never got to meet Henning. However I did see him in Houston Texas one time.. So we went to Vegas.. We were in the valet getting our rent a car on March 30,1981 getting ready to leave Caesars Palace Tahoe, when we heard some indian guys yelling I'm so glad that the President got shot... we were thinking that those guys over there are crazy people. They were talking about Ronald Regan who had just been shot.. I guess they didn't like him... Not cool what a story.. man you remember those events in life. The Regan thing just burns that date in time into your memory.. crazy.. Taylor Reed

I met him last year thanks to Chris Kenner. Chris is an incredibly nice guy. David was also very nice, but you can tell he didn't mind staying but if he saw he could go, he would. Which I fully respect. I met him actually a year prior to that, he was nice enough to let us (group of magicians from NY) to meet him before he got on his tour bus. Another, wonderful hookup from Chris. He stayed signed, took photos then hopped onto his bus.
A lot of respect has to be given, after all these years he still doesn't mind. Where most would be annoyed. He doesn't seem thrilled, but he definitely isn't bothered by it. Says a lot . |

I met David in Vegas after his show in summer 2011. He was very nice, chatted with everyone. After the people that were on stage with him were gone, he came back to me and said "You're here with Walter Blaney?! that's so great!" He then put his hand on my arm and said some very nice things, looking me in the eyes all time. He was very genuine and warm.

In the early to mid 80s I stood in the long line after one of his shows. All the other people were getting his autograph on one of his photographs or a T-shirt. I got to the table, handed him a VHS tape and said, "Could you please sign your latest TV special?" He smiled with genuine amusement and proceeded to sign the sticker I placed on the tape!

He gave me a thumbs up when he signed his autograph and I said "Someday I'll do Magic with you!".
I've never really needed much encouragement since then. Copperfield said I could, so I can. Gimme a few years David.

I remember getting to meet him after his show in 1983 or 1984 at the Warner Theater in DC. I still have the program he signed. It was not long after I saw the Statue of Liberty illusion on TV and that made me want to be a magician.

First time I met him was spring of '92. Flying had just aired and I saw him in Hershey, PA. He sat in a big lounge chair and signed autographs. The second time was a little over a year later. I was a local IATSE stagehand and guess who got to work backstage during his show.

I got an autograph during his first tour
Just a small podium, no handlers, only one guy to keep the line straight and a happy man who was living his dream.
