Greeting forum members,
I've just registered and cannot tell you how excited I am to be here. Thanks Steve, Gene and everyone else responsible for creating this terrific forum! I have a long overdue question to ask, if you please. Some 30 years ago, I was instructed in the performance and making of a great gimmick. I still make and use this gimmick today, but have no idea what it's called or who created it. I stumbled upon a "performance only" video of the effect on YouTube a few years ago and had it bookmarked, only to lose the bookmark when my old PC crashed. I hope this is the correct place to ask the question. Understanding that this is not the place to discuss methodology, I will say that I always called the effect "Acrobatic Pencils" and it used a loop of sorts. Can anyway help me out with the correct name and origin? Thanks much! TSW PS This is my first post. I hope I did it right. Suggestions? |

Alan Alan is credited with this trick version of the trick from England called Dual Control. Here in the U.S. it was sold my Magic Inc. and associated with the late Jay Marshall as "The Loop". Other magic dealers have sold this gimmick under different names.
http://www.magicinc.net/theloop.aspx L & L Publishing gave the Pat Page and Alan Alan of Dual Control away free with an order several years ago, without the props. I was disappointed that no information on making the gimmick was given, being the props were not included. The only tricks I seen with is the suspended pencil and a rising playing card from deck. It is not used much by magician because of the preparation needed, and the vast change in how people dress today. |

Some of the best tricks are tricks from the "old school days" as nobody seems to have heard of them. Jay Marshal had some really cool stuff with Magic Inc.. Anybody remember "Squash?"

Squah was a Percey Abbott invention, he started his business on pitching this little gem. It was my 1st trick I purchased on my 1st visit to Abbott's in 1964.

That is absolutely it! Thank you all so much! I'm going to have to buy the DVD from Michael Vincent Productions to learn all the other amazing things I can do with this gimmick. I've often wondered if there wasn't someway one might utilize the gimmick for a sort of impromptue, examinable version of "Acrobatic Matchbox" (if that's what it's called). I may also have to buy the Jay Marshal "Loop" from Magic Inc. just to make sure I've been making it correctly, after all these years!
Thanks again. You guys are great! TSW |

I fried a lot of magicians with this to do a rising card from a borrowed deck. Larry Jennings did the same effect.

If you want an impromptu Acrobatic Match Box rouine, I recommend Rick Johnsson "Strike One" effect.

One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

WOW, that was a fast demo. The best part to me, was the reproduction of the glass of liquid from behind your knee.
