I recently "got back" into coin magic and decided on using Morgan dollars for numerous effects. There is one flourish I like to do in which I toss four coins in the air and catch them in my hand. For some reason it looks cool to me and feels nice when I catch them. Do you guys think this flourish will ding my coins too much? I haven't really noticed any large nicks or scratches, but I'm guessing it may be happening gradually and I want to avoid having scratched up coins, as these are in decent condition. Does anyone know if there is any validity to my concern?

Not sure about "easily", but yes the silver coins may get scratched a bit. I wouldn’t worry about it too much though. After all these are OLD coins and are expected to be in a less than pristine condition. If the particular Morgans you are using are what you consider to be "show" coins, meaning that you want to keep them polished and nice looking for people to look at, then just get yourself some more Morgans to be your "working coins".

I use silver dollars and half dollars and I dp all kinds of crazy sleights that involve the coins hitting each other, and there has been no damage for me. The coins I have are mostly warn so it does not make a difference if they are beat up or not.

Yes silver dings. It is a soft metal. If it matters to you is your decision.

To a collector it would matter if the coins are dinged or not. To your spectators it won't matter however. Silver coins are old they are going to have a used look to them.

As long as you don't dent a expensive shell and mess up the fit.then you have a problem.

Unfortunately I dropped a few of my silver coins and the WL coins seems to like to dent more than others, but the feeling of silver in a coin roll or other slights when you are learning is amazing and makes you want to continue using them regardless of the chances. Might give you the edge to learn not to drop them more I'd imagine. I would rather work with coins in used condition than pristine condition just for the fact that it won't flash as well, and also to the audience it looks more like a real coin when it looks more circulated.

^not true.
All silver coins dent extremely easily. I dropped a sweet soft Morgan on the wood floor here at home a few months ago, and it had a dent that caused some serious stuttering in my work. When the coins would meet together, I could feel that tiny burr catching, they bend easy with a little weight too. I replaced it with another, just to drop another one on my cement driveway when doing a MP. This one has a huge flat spot on the edge making it out of round with burring on both edge sides. Worst was dropping my $140.00 soft RK morgan shell at a gem show while sitting down so no crummens, the coins won't just be fine. Wait till you pay a few thousand for some serious workers coins. they cost more than most so called collector coins as you put it. |

If you catch them all, the dings won't be too bad. In fact, as long as it's only the coins that are hitting each other, and they're not colliding with each other at supersonic speeds, they actually wear in nicely and soften! Though, silver IS soft, so DROPPING them... Yeah...

I just dropped my WL's while showing someone 3/4 across and failed because some guy bumped me while going for the final catch on sidewalk. Now there is a nice nick on two of the coins that I can feel while coin rolling them. So frustrating to feel it but hey that's the risk you take using silver. Looking into some silver quarters to see how they fair for impromptu, but I'd imagine the same outcome will occur. I need to sweep with the leg next time and hopefully soften the landing of the coins if it happens again.

Just spend some time smoothing out the dent, and eventually it will become soft again. I'll post a picture of my main WL set soon. It's a matching set from Lassen, and it was basically totally clean when I got it. Now they have been dropped so many times. I don't care anymore since I know how to soften them up again when I need to. My Morgans are still fresh...I'd like to keep them that way but I'm sure at some point they will do the same. |

Silver is soft, so of course it dings easily. However, as others have said, it really doesn't matter; it's not like you are keeping the coins for their collectible value (if you were, you'd be storing them in a case).
