I posted this on the "Tricks and Effects for Sale" section. I thought I should post it here as well.
Todd Lassen has made custom, hand crafted, one of a kind coin sets for many years. Recently he introduced his "Commercial Line" of coins which use clad silver coins snd various foreign coins. It is my understanding, that these coins are not represented as being hand crafted by Todd, but rather are manufactured to his specs and with his approval by other machinists. This situation is causing confusion among buyers and sellers here on the Café. I recently listed a hand crafted, hallmarked English Penny set here on the Café. The eventual buyer questioned my price based on what Todd was asking for a shell set on his Commercial Site. I explained to the buyer that Todd doesn't hand make the Commercial sets. He was not aware of this. I see this situation creating a lot of confusion and potential ill will here on the Café. I propose that if you know you are selling a Commercial set or gaff that you identify it as such. If you have a hallmarked set, be sure to mention that fact, as it is proof that it is a true Lassen custom set, though early Lassen sets do not have the hallmark. I think there are a number of us who collect original, hand crafted Lassen sets that we know were hand crafted by Todd. I would hate to see the value of these sets diminished, based on the pricing of the Commercial sets. Sammy

Sammy,
First, there are no such thing as "clad silver coins", so of course Todd isn't making any! These gaffs are made from clad coins plus various copper and brass coins. I do believe that Todd stated that others will be involved in making these coins once he is selling them to magic distributors. However all that I have purchased to date I am fairly certain that Todd made them, mainly because they all have either his Infinity edge or his new blended edge. If you told someone that Todd doesn’t make the commercial sets then I think you may have been fibbing! Todd opened the commercial site back in May and I haven't seen any degrading of the value Todd's regular products. I also haven't seen any confusion or ill will here at the Café - or anywhere else for that matter - other than your singular post here. Chill, Sammy! Jim |

I have to agree with jim.the coins on todds commercial site are made just as well as his custom site.most all of his galf coins are made with manual machines.final touchs by hand.i don't beleive many will get mixed up because only his silver line are made at his custom shop.and most who buy lassen lassen products know this already.

The youngsters will just have to learn the difference between silver and clad sets.
I think Todd has made it public that he has an apprentice that is making his clad stuff, and that once everything gets off the ground his idea is to be left alone to do his custom work. At present, I think he has his hands full making both. |

In the interest of accuracy, the 1965-1970 Kennedy Half Dollar was actually a clad silver coin. Glad you guys don't see this becoming an issue. I hope you are right. I just know that I have already experienced my price being questioned based on the pricing of the Commercial sets. I will now "Chill"! Sammy Quote:

Todd's custom work isn't necessarily hallmarked. I have 5 (ish) gaffs from Todd, 2 of which are hallmarked. I'm absolutely sure they were made by him because I dealt with him directly. This was in the last couple of years.
Todd is awesome, btw. I'm sure everyone already knew that but it's worth saying again. |
