I'm interested to hear around how many business cards people go through per year, and what are the most common times you give them out?
I'm currently working full time in a non-magic job, so I'm currently going through very few. I'd like to hear from the people doing magic full time. |

I order about 2000 cards a year and give them out EVERYPLACE. When I do a party, the cards are with the invoice. I eat at a restaurant, the card is with the tip. The more cards you give out, the more calls you get. BTW if you start booking every call you get. Check prices of other entertainers because you are way to low! Then you get the reputation of the (censored) around here that has to change the name of his company every year because he charges $65 an hour LESS than everybody else. Needless to say he is not well liked among all the other entertainers

I just don't understand spreading them out like that, and then not wanting to answer calls from prospectors.

I go through a 2,500 box in about a year, but I don't force them on anybody. I have an attractive card that when people look at their first response is "this guy must be serious"

But Al, that is why Paddy must force his cards with people. When they look at his cards, their first response is "this guy must not be serious."

Mike, with your show, if it's like your street routine, don't waste money on cards. The only good thing I have seen or heard of is your ring routine. Which you stole. I have never forced anybody to take a card. I actually perform shows, not run up post counts like some people with 20K posts
I get responses all thge time by handing my cards out. Glad you think that servers are barely making it. The ones I know and work with consider any shift where the get less than $100 is poor. On weekends they do even better. I have never cut my rates for a server because they can afford good entertainers. The idea behind business cards is to be your quiet salesmen. I don't want my salesmen sitting on their butts in the office. |

Nu? I don't know what got into his undies to make some comments that I consider insulting. But I will tell the truth about him, or any subject and not hold back any punches. As I told him in another thread when he threw an insult at me. I realize that English is not his preferred language but that uneducated slang is what he uses in everyday life. If he backs off I will stop and even apologize when he realizes that some of us work at performing and some only steal others ideas and try to post them as their own.

When a customer pays me I give them 10 business cards in case anyone in the audience wants one.
If its a private house I put a business card magnet on the fridge. Unles it's a stainless one than it's a no go. I enclose 2 cards in mailings.

I have only start magic as a profession this year. I have already went through around 1000 business cards. I pass them out when asked at the restaurant I work; leave some there; and I do a few free shows for places that may hire me later and the only stipulation is that I pass out cards. I passed out 200 cards at a school event last week. The principal already wants me for a stage show in the spring and I'm sure a few kids (at least... hopefully) will call me for a party. I also do the boys and girls club in my area when I'm trying out new stuff. The kids love it; you see how new material goes over; and free publicity.

Siraldi, good points except one thing. You state " I do a few free shows for places that may hire me later." It has been the experience of most of us that the only thing you get off a free show is offers to do other free shows. I hope that this is not the case for you but it has happened to many of us. When I am asked by a charity to do a show and I hear the phrase "Think of all the publicity you will get." I automatically add a minimum of $1000 to mu usual price and tell them that is my "charity rate." I will do, and have even turned down paying gigs to do a freebie for certain organizations. Make A Wish Foundation being the main one for me but just don't expect to get paying shows from freebies.

I just got a box of 5000 business cards. I'm expecting that to last me about a year.
I had been ordering them in lots of 1000, but I was going through them too quickly, and the price for 5000 was quite reasonable. - Donald

So 5,000 cards a year? How many of those result in work? Just curious.
