I'm in the market for software to help me catalog my magic book library.
Do you have any experience with any programs that do that. I'd also appreciate any comments on pros and cons of any particular programs.
Thanks!

Levent wrote some stuff on cataloging on his website. It is a good starting point. No matter what you get, it will have to be tweated as you find things you want to add or delete.

I would suggest Filemaker Pro as you can add categories as you wish even after records are entered. It is also cross platform for IBM and Mac.

Hi,

Can I suggest NM Collector Software? It is template based so it can be used for any type of collection including Books. I do not yet have a book template but one can be easily created.

Thanks,

Are you using FileMaker Pro?

That is what I am going to use. Klosterman has his entire collection on it as do several other guys. What I like is it is cross platform (Mac or IBM) and you can add fields as you work with the files without having to reenter the whole thing.

I just have to find time to start getting all this stuff organized.

I've heard Bento is decent, like a simpler version of FileMaker. You can also access it through your iphone, which I supose could be handy for some. There are also templates available for download. You could also use Access, but I hate it. So much.

This looks like a lot of fun, and far easier than Bento, Filemaker, or Access. (I'm not sure if ISBNs are necessary to enter the books, and that would be important to know in advance of purchase, since many of the books are not likely to have an ISBN.) http://www.collectorz.com/book/book_catalog.php

5 star tip !!! collectorz.com looks superb and will definitely organise our local magic club book library. Might have to speak to the librarian, to see if they are interested in doing something like this. Even has a book loan function. Very useful.
Thank you for sharing. And for under 30 UK pounds, it's a bargain.

After a fair amount of research and weighing my needs with what is offered, I decided on collectorz.com Book Collector. Has shallow learning curve, easy to use GUI, you can export .csv files, enter by ISBN, scan, manually, or automatically. If you go to their website you can try it for free for 30 days.
Thanks to all who made suggestions.
