Many illusions are not patented but still you have to get permission to use it and pay for the rights to do so - like Steinmeyer, Andre Kole, Daniel Summers & John Taylor illusions Patents don't work for illusions because you need to give the secret away and even when Steinmeyer patented his origami it got ripped off anyway! It's all about ethics and Professional courtesy 2.We do know where the versions originate, examples are Cyrils & Rafaels version. And some are protected like Rafael's version, he won a court case over this. The reason that the Japanese girl, Cyril, Rafael and Peter Marvey don't sell their own unique versions of this effect is because they like to keep their versions exclusive for their own show and of course they are entitled to do so. 3. While there was a costume where you hold your own head, the dropping of the head was independently created by the little Japanese girl & by Rafael around the same time. Rafael was able to prove in court that before he created his version there was no simular effect in existance so it is not an old vaudeville or clown gag like some claim (false claims probably made by copy-cats so they can sell or perform a rip-off) Since both where created without knowing of each other and since they are very different from each other and there was never a issue between the two of them. Cyril created the best version of this effect after asking permission from the Japanese girl (since his version is inspired by hers) and his version is the most populair and the one that people try to copy. I say try as it is very difficult and expensive to build a good version, Cyrils version cost over $15000 All the above facts have been checked and a lot of top professionals & historicals know these facts as well. |

I can see the research and development, etc of Cyril's costing 15000. His gimmick did not cost 15000.

It's not just for the gimmick!
A lot of time & money goes into the prototypes and research & development until it is perfected. $ 15000 is peanuts when creating something. |

I just said that above and you corrected me...

You are right, I wrote 'gimmick' but I meant to say 'illusion'.
So no need for me to correct you instead I need to correct myself ;-) |

Hahaha, no prob. I totally believe tons of research went into it. We can argue ethics all day long, but I'm sure our arguments aren't going to change the outcome of this Halloween prank - which I thought was neat.
