Hi all
Previously I have only run my shows from rented venues but, after reading Jim Magus' book "Raising the dead for fun and profit", I am starting to reconsider whether it would be better (and cheaper for me) to run my shows from people's homes. What are your thoughts on this? Have any of you done this? Was the experience mainly positive or was it a disaster? |

Ah, but I provide all participants with a free "protective charm" to stop any unwanted "visitors" from following them home

Yes.
The program should be designed to be performed in room light to low light, black out is nearly impossible. It should require minimal space, and be flexible. Don't expect the client to have or even understand requirements you may provide, bring everything you need. Tony |

I've done the one seance evening in a persons house and it works well. Not really much different in terms of set up than running a psychic home party. Richard Webster I think mentions it in his book on psychic parties briefly. Alan Strydom in "working the psychic home party circuit" mentions that he used to offer seance parties as an alternative to his normal home party. However he mentions they were never as popular as the reading based parties. The one time I've tried it as a paid gig I pretty much followed the program laid out in Paul Voodini's paranormal entertainer. It plays through well, but does make for a long night as I did longer on readings. It was a positive night though, good fun.
I have offered it again on my list of themed parties I can do in homes as I'm starting to get repeat business on the home party front, so won't to keep the nights distinct. But on the whole I'd rather do my general home psychic party than any of the others. But now offering a general party with a few psychic tests followed by readings, a development party where I'll introduce a basic skill like palmistry, past life regressions/scrying party, and the seance party. So far its been the readings people have wanted in their own home though not the seance. But that's not to say its not a viable option. I'm trying to avoid too much on the seance front as at 26 I am still young to be doing work of that nature. http://www.mindmagicillusions.com/mental......ies.html http://www.readerofminds.co.uk/paranormal_20.html |

I always run seances from people's dining room tables. I've never had any problems with it at all. In fact, the only problem I have is mouthy specs shouting too many questions and confusing the planchette.

The trick is making it dark enough. Castle medium Leo Kostka tipped his very practical portable seance in the January 2003 issue of Genii. Easy to look up if you are a subscriber.

Dark plastic sheets can cover a lot of area. The fewer the windows to cover the better. The blue tape that does not leave a residue is good but is not the strongest. I have had problems with drapes where covering the outside of the window was a solution. It does take a fair amount of time and the right items to set up sufficiently.

I think it's a matter of taste and possibility. I do seances at peoples homes, but I myself enjoy it very mutch when I have an appropriate setting, like a old mansion, an old pub or a old castle.
I just think it's sometimes odd, when you try to create an appropriate mood and in the display beside the seance table is the house owners teddy bear collection. |

Does everyone sit around a table? If so, how many can you sit around a table?
How many people do you need to sit to make it worth the time and effort? I know the last one is a question depending on the individual, but please feel free to expand on the answer in order to get a sense of value. Ex: I only do this for 6 people at a time but they all pay very well. I only do this for 6 people at a time. I don't make a lot of money but I enjoy doing it. It's not always about the money.

@evildan:
I charge per show, but the limit is 12 people and the minimum 4. I like to present at a table, with me standing most of the time and the audience sitting. But a circle of chairs works also. |

When I worked with Trinity on The Cross Creek Graveyard Seance we designed it for B&B's where we would be at the front "stage" and everyone else would be watching from an audience perspective. There were three of us in the show perform and it allowed for large audiences, 50 - 75.
I have one now that I performed a few times with my wife as part of the seance. It's designed to be performed around a larger table, such as an 8 seater banquet table with a staggered circle of people outside the table. I can accomadate about 15 - 20 guests. That's not bad but I'm currently doing this at a meeting in an Elks club. As I visit people's houses I check the layout and find that most houses that I go into can't accomodate too many people for a seance. Most dining rooms have enough room for a table and not an outside circle. So space is my main problem.
