[obviously this is for readers]
Does anyone have and or use this deck? I've been getting back into the runes a bit lately (mostly for private/ sprirtual reasons, I haven't done readings for people yet) and I thought I would get a deck to start playing around with before I actually carve a set. It's an interesting deck because it has beautiful pictures that accurately reflect (for the most part) the 'traditional' (non-Blumian) rune meanings and old Norse culture. I also like the idea of 'unpacking,' so to speak, the runes into a more graphic representation. ...but I don't lIke it myself. I feel far to constrained by the pictures to expand on runic associations outside what is represented. If anyone has this, or reads runes and has thoughts on it, I'd love to hear your opinions.

If you are doing a serious study of the runes, consider reading books written on the subject by Stephen Flowers.

Thank you, I have several of his books and have read most of his books at one point or another. I have mixed feelings about him because he (consciously and admittedly) is heavily influenced in his interpretations and philosophy by the TOS and in practice by the Armanen magicians. I have no problem with either group, I just think it undermines his continually emphasis on how authentic his system is and I wish he be more clear in explaining which parts of his work are historical and which are from non-philological sources.
I still love his books though; I am going to request his thesis through ILL; it's supposed to be his best work. I like Kveldulf Gundarsson and Freya Aswynn's books because they have what I feel is a more organic take on the matter and Gundarsson has a comparable academic pedigree but no Armanen and TIS influence and rejects the Dumzil theories that so stringy inform Flowers' work. All that being said, I did just buy a copy of the nine doors of Midgard and am considering workin through it.

This is one of those things that just happens some days... So, just a couple of days ago it hit me that runes don't have to be carved on stones or wood or bone in order to be learned or used. I had this great idea for putting them on cards. Portable, cheap, different from other card methods while retaining the rune mystique. This is the first time I've had internet since then and I see that it is already done.
Suggestion: with a word-processing program and a printer, you could totally make your own cards that look professional. With notecards and a sharpie you can make them in minutes. While I have not seen the deck you reference, I must say I don't like the idea of using an oracle that has someone else's personal interpretation stamped on it. I even prefer a Marseilles tarot deck over most others just because it is less burdened with others' ideas. If the Power deck does not totally jive with your understandings, I'd say it may be less useful than a homemade deck that just shows the runes and leaves out the baggage. My 2 cents. -Patrick |

That is a really good idea.
You could make a working deck with cards and a marker as you get started. This would also allow you to add other notes, interpretations, insights etc as you work with the runes. Then you could make a more professional looking set to actually use in readings with sitters. Much cheaper and you will eventually create something that is uniquely yours. This is a similar approach I used years ago with the tarot. I got a cheap deck and made notes on them to make a practice deck and then bought a better deck to actually use in readings for others. |

Good points, I agree.
For anyone curious, this is the deck http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/power-runes/ There have actually been several http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/runes.shtml some of these are actually very good looking (to me at least), while others don't seem to know which culture they are working with (celtic runes?). I guess the personal interpretation is the thing; with just a rune you have access to so many connections and interpretations. It seems like a picture would expand on the meanings, but to me it seems to limit them. Interesting.

Courtney-
Wow again! I had not realized just how many rune decks there were. I do enjoy browsing Aeclectic's site for the eye candy. I think that pictures really do help, but only if your own interpretations match the artist's interpretations pretty much exactly. Otherwise, there's a little bit of a logical disconnect because what you are seeing on the card and what you are seeing in your mind are different. Just for fun ideas, a while back Veritas Woodworking had maple veneer business cards. I bet something like that with runes on the cards and a nice lacquer finish would be just lovely to play with. -Patrick |
