Terry, I do appreciate your worries. But what happens on a stage is nothing like what happens when a therapist or a dentist uses hypnosis. And when I said that abreaction was a feature of therapy, what I meant was that it is something which occurs within a therapeutic context. It does not happen on stage. None of the guys on here have stories about abrections during shows.
If hypnosis happens during a stage show, it is completely different than hypnosis that happens in other contexts. And it is perfectly safe, once you know what you are doing, and you look out for the actual physical dangers (falling off stages, tripping over furniture, etc).

I HAVE had kids WANTING to volunteer in hypnosis shows at country clubs.
The parents are there. If the 10-14 year olds come up, I point into the audience and FIND the parents of these kids, one by one and get them to verbablly say "YES, It's OK", and also Nod their heads in "Agreement" as I know that the show is being video recorded and the camera is pointed right at them, when they AGREE to let their kid participate. (They may not SEE the camera, but. . . its rolling.) I don't WANT kids to volunteer and wont take on a "Childrens-Kids Show" but when you have 5 chairs left and you've been begging and begging for volunteers and well, THEN, if these parents fully AGREE, then I can fill up the last chairs. Now here is something wierd: The kids do fine under hypnosis. (They are UNDER hypnosis most of the time anyway, bouncing back and forth all during the day) so they go under just fine. When I ask them to do things, under hypnosis, they KNOW the words to songs they have probably have not heard, but maybe once in their entire lives and they can lip-sync. They also know and can say things that ONLY ADULTS might normally know. Its as if. . . that there IS some transfer of knowledge from mother to baby, (while in the womb) just like kittens and puppies. You've seen these "Child Prodigies" that Play a musical instrument. . . like an adult that's been practicing for many many YEARS. . . or a "Child Prodigie" that is doing calculus at age 9, same thing. Something was passed along. Maybe from several generations of children/mothers and it all accumulated in this one child, who is turning it on. (Like I have seen samples of, during a hypnosis show.) Seems like Hypnosis can unlock the block to a child's mind and LET. . . that knowledge out. |

If you have consent and you have a kid who is hurt by an adult falling on them or stepping on them, it does not matter. Guess who gets sued? I will give you 3 guesses and the first two don't count.
Parents consent to kids going on roller coasters, they do not consent for accidents. Children because of their size are MUCH more likely to be hurt by accident than an adult. It is your job to make certain these things do not happen. Even if a child is not hurt badly things can happen with children. It is a BAD perception and to do it just to "fill up the chairs" makes almost no sense to me. For me it is just a bad look to it. 14 is probably the ragged edge of what I would want on stage in a show with adults involved. Certainly not 10. No matter HOW many chairs I had to fill. It does not matter if they can or can't do it. It is about so many other things.

True, kids could get accidentally hurt by a falling adult, or in a roller coaster, as you say. I was involved in a bad roller coaster accident when I was twelve. But my parents let me on the roller coaster that day. And they let me on afterwards too. And in the last thirty five years I have not had another accident.
We can be over careful. If our show is structured in such a way that it works with kids, and if the parents do not have a problem, then I say go ahead. If our show is structured in such a way as to need over sixteens or over eighteens as volunteers, then do not accept those under age. The bottom line is that it is a choice we have as performers, and nothing to do with the intrinsic nature of stage hypnosis.

Absolutely NONE Tony that is for sure. No doubt.
In America Tony you getting hurt on a roller coaster would be national news, and a HUGE law suit.

Danny, it happened in Wales, so no lawsuit. The restraining bar snapped and I was flung out at the top. I managed to hold on to the side of the car with one hand, and was rescued. All I got in compensation was the offer of a free ride. Different times.

What you don't know is I own a lead generation company for personal injury lawyers here in the UK. If Tony had fallen and injured himself today the owners of the roller coaster would have definitely been sued. Even back in those days they could have been sued if Tony had been injured. If no one is injured then chances are no one will be sued. It would be the same in the UK with a roller coaster accident there would be a huge law suit but only if there was a real serious injury as a consequence. The more serious the injury the bigger the compensation that's how it goes.
Mental or emotional injuries are harder to prove even if they are caused by the hypnotist. Personally I think its in incredibly bad taste to hypnotize kids and it is illegal here which I am definitely for. Just because it is difficult to prove doesn't mean it's not possible and I would hate to be the cause of creating problems for anyone especially a young child. Ive listened to all types of claims and accidents and am totally sure that majority of people who experienced an accident during a hypnosis show today would pick up the phone and call a lawyer. I don't know how easy it would be to be sued but I wouldn't want to take the risk. In general over here Lawyers only accept cases they know they can win easily. They reject the vast majority of leads I send them. But the bigger the injury the more money involved the more motivated the lawyers are. that's why its a good idea to follow the guide lines be insured etc as it really cuts down your chances of ever being sued at least here n the UK. |
