As some of you might recall, what I miss most about the States is twofold: going to baseball games, and America food. And although I'd like to start throwing around a bunch of fancy, gourmet-sounding favorite dishes, the truth is that I crave things like chili dogs, Fritos, and...Hostess products. My favorite is the Hostess Cherry Pie. I've talked about it before, but I can hardly come close to telling you how deep my craving is. I literally dream about the darn things.

And the most re-current dream I have about them is that I can't get them. This probably happens to me once per month. I'll dream that I'm in the US visiting family, and that I'm roaming a Wal-Mart in frustration trying to find cherry pies to no avail.

I even had this dream only recently (within the last two weeks): I was at some kind of convenience store buying a pie. And the guy at the counter said, "that'll be $1.47." So I get out my coin purse and start digging through it. I only have dimes, nickels, and pennies, so it's gonna be close. And the guy keeps taking the coins as I put them on the counter and putting them in the register. I finally count out $1.46 out to him, and he says, "You're thirty cents short." I say, "no I'm not." He says, "yes you are. So I pull out my wallet and hand him a $20 bill and say, "well, then, just take it from this." And he takes the $20 bill and puts it in his register and says, "you're still twenty cents short." I am aghast. I say, "Sir, you take the $20 bill, subtract the thirty cents from that, and give me back my $19.30 and give me that pie. Please." The man says, "what $20 bill?" He then gave me a violent grin, and I realized (remember, I was dreaming) that if a convenience store clerk wants to steal from you, he or she can do just that. Ain't nothing you can do. So I left the store, woke up, and felt violated.

Now I find out that Hostess is closing down. I suppose that they might sell off Twinkies and HoHos and Snowballs to other mass-produced-bakery-product manufacturers. But the pies? And I did find a very tasty pie that I liked very much (though Hostess it wasn't) called, "Cutie Pies". And sure, I realize that I don't live in the States anyway, so at least part of the horror of such a dream is that I can't just wake up and trot down to the 7-Eleven or Sheetz or whatever and buy a pie to satisfy the urge. It's an urge I can seldom satisfy.

Drake's Twinkies, anyone? Entenmann's Ding Dong's?

Let's hope so. But mostly, let's hope someone buys the recipes for those pies and starts distributing them INTERNATIONALLY! Yoo Hoo! Yippie! Huzzah!

Hostess baked over 30 different brands. The bakery industry is over capacity, but at least some of the Hostess brands are so strong, that a competitor will likely pick them up. It would be a great opportunity for a company with the skills, capacity, and drive to do it.

Bought a box of ten Twinkies on my way to the office this morning.

See y'all on eBay.

I know. That's why I gave the Twinkies to them. But they already have their own (inferior) pies. Smile

Sheetz??? Dude, you are so NE Ohio or Western Pa. I love Sheetz. Their MTO is one of the best marketing concepts I have ever seen. Have had many a breakfast sandwiches MTO at 2 am. Sadly, there are also 18,000 people going to lose their jobs over the Hostess closing. I have a friend whose husband drives a delivery truck for them and is losing his job after 30 yrs and it wasn't even the drivers striking. It was the bakers. I am very pro-union, but in this economy, unions have to realize that they aren't as strong as they once were. Hopefully some company takes up the Hostess brand and some or most of those people can keep their jobs.

If they're money makers, they'll be around. Just hope the new manufacturer's don't muck up things re: how they taste by changing the recipies!

I have to admit, I never cared for the Cherry Pies, but LOVED the Apple Pies. Ding Dongs were, and still, are classics.

I don't know if I have ever had a Snowball. Something tells me I have at least tried one, but I have no memory of it. That pink just never appealed to me for some reason. Don't even know what's inside/what they're made of!

Going to Google that now...
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

As far as I can tell it's some sort of rubber.

Yeah, a Sno Ball is some kind of industrial-sugar-based-polymer nearly identical to rubber (in fact, I think it was accidentally discovered in WWII-era research for rubber substitutes) covered with artificial coconut-flavored, paper-like particles.

They taste great!

They're called Sno-Balls. Beneath the coconut is marshmallow.

They'll probably make them in some third world country like Mexico, like Nabisco and Hershey do. Thanks NAFTA.

That's an interesting point, because until today--and a few minutes of Internet research--I hadn't realized that a Mexican company owns a lot of traditional bakery brands in America (like Sara Lee and Entenmann's).

I learned my chemistry by reading the labels of those Hostess cherry pies in my school lunch.

It's the other way around. The corporations owns parts of Mexico.

And with water being the main component to their production, that should really want you to buy Mexican produced food stuffs.

Don't tell them the pies and such could double as a laxative... it'll just give 'em reason to raise the price.

No, here in the US, Nabisco used their own well water to make Fig Newtons, etc.. The same well water Great Bear Water uses for their bottled water.

Does anyone else think it's funny that a thread about herb vanished and a new one about Twinkies popped up?
