Does anyone know where you can get the foam for a case? Preferably the kind that is pre-cut into little squares so you can easily customize it. I appreciate the input.
I'm looking for that gray type foam you see in the close up cases or tool cases you get a Home Depot or Lowes. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

This is one source:

Thanks VideoMan. In my search I also found this company for those interested, but you have to call for prices:

Some some arts and craft stores have this along with a special foam cutting knife. Down here a chain called "Hobby Lobby" has it. You also might try the "Michaels" chain if it is in your area.

Depending on what you are actually looking for - the pull and pluck foam is available on line - I will look up the site for you - but you might want to try a case company - they have the means to custom cut the foam for you.

You can cut the foam with an electric knife -- the kind you use for carving the Holiday turkey.
Watch out for polyfoam in direct contact with oiled metal, lacquers and certain plastics. Poly foam can, under certain conditions, break down into uric acid and other chemicals which can really mess up your props. You are much better off lining boxes with carpeting and/or velvet. I lost an Owen Bow Sawing to a breakdown of the poly foam in an Anvil case. Since I wasn't the original purchaser of the case or the illusion, I was SOL when it came to making a claim against anyone on it. I ate the loss. If you are packing something for carriage and/or storage, put it in polyethylene bags before you put it into the polyfoam.

Bill,
That is a huge bit of advice. I have had the same thing happen to me. I am not sure what caused the breakdown but man did it mess up my props. I had to pay a professional craftsman to refurbish the piece back to working order. I have also had luck getting different types of foam from a reupholster shop.

You can get good quality foam from any company that makes road cases for musicians.Sometimes you can get a road case at a good price as well because they might have an unclaimed order or two.It never hurts to ask.
