One movie I saw many times was The Raven (1963) with Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff as battling magicians. Peter Lorre was the bumbling apprentice. Vincent Price was the good magician, and Boris Karloff was the evil magician.

Dom DeLouise plays a funny part in Woody Allen's remake of "Dont' Drink the Water" (1994).
Dom plays Father Drobney, a priest, and wannabe magician holed up inside the American Embassy in (I think) Russia. All of his tricks go bad, but I will say that those wanting to perfect a "magic act that goes awry" premise might want to see the end of this movie. |

There were also two films based loosely on the H.P Lovecraft material - Cast A Deadly Spell and I forget the second. The first one stars Fred Ward as a private eye in the late '40's or early '50's in a world like ours, but where real magick has come into the mainstream.
Fickle Fire, Floating Champaigne Pour (Fabjance version), and a whole lot more in this fun little film noir send up of some of Lovecraft and Dereleth's works. Recommended for fun - and watch the backgrounds, especially in the nightclub scenes - LOTS of magic there! Lee Darrow, C.Ht. http://www.leedarrow.com

Penn and Teller Get Killed was a movie in the early nineties or late eighties that had a fair amount of magic in it and of course Penn and Teller with their brand of macabre humor and pranks. It is a fun movie to watch.

I was looking forward to Shade, the movie with Sly Stallone as stated above by Adam Grace. I wish I knew when or even if it is coming to England. I read about it in the Genii magazine. Also the movie about Maskelyne, I think Jasper, starring Tom Cruise. It was in the U.K's papers a long time ago. I will certainly see it. andy

His character had nothing to do with the real Larry Jennings. It's one of the fun things about the movie that will be enjoyed by magicians: all of the characters have the same names as famous magicians - famous, that is, to other magicians. The general public won't have the slightest sense that this is the case. And none of these characters has anything to do with the real magicians. For example, the mob boss is named Max Malini. Hmmm...
Off the top of my head, another two that have not been mentioned (and I can't believe were over-looked) are: "Ragtime" 1981, Paramount Pictures, nominated for 5 Academy Awards! The footage of "Houdini" doing the upside-down strait-jacket stunt was actually performed by my mentor (and friend) Scott Interrante who was only 17 or 18 at the time. "Quicker Than The Eye" 1989, Academy Entertainment, starred Ben Gazzara and Mary Crosby (the late Bing Crosby's daughter). A spy-thriller, which I think was shot in a few Slovik countries. What ever happened to that Tom Cruise movie about a magician who helped win a war? Has anybody heard of this?

There's a new one out called The Art and Soul of Magic. I've not seen it, I wasn't able to see it yesterday at the River Run Film festival here in NC. Hopefully it'll be making a festival run and will come your way. Might want to keep your eye out for this one, although I really know nothing about it.

Woody Allen's segment of the movie "New York Stories"
(segment entitled Oedipus Wrecks ) concerns a man who wishes to be rid of his manipulative , over-bearing mother . Features Woody Allen in the role of Sheldon, a 50-year-old Jewish lawyer. Sheldon wishes his domineering mother (Mae Questel) would disappear, and when she does (during a magic show), his life takes a dramatic turn for the better. Gorgeously photographed,"Oedipus Wrecks" is a pleasant but minor Woody Allen effort. http://www.woodyallenmovies.com/movies/newyorkstories.htm Magicians and hypnotists figure in several of Woody Allen's short stories and at least one of his other movies. His play "The Floating Lightbulb" features a kid who does magic. (related, though not a movie, Steve Martin has also written two plays that feature magic themes : "Patter for the Floating Lady" and "The Zig Zag Woman" ) "You Can't Cheat An Honest Man" (1939) starring W.C. Fields, Edgar Bergen, and Charlie McCarthy features Bergen as a side-show magician in a circus run by W.C. Fields . Did anyone mention the filmed version of "The Magic Show" starring Doug Henning ? This version differs somewhat from the original musical that appeared on Broadway, with a few new songs and some additional magic that was not performed in the Broadway version, but it is the only record that exists of this landmark show . It shows up now and then on eBay in VHS tape version, but the DVD has not yet been released . (and , by the way, where , oh where , are the Doug Henning magic specials from NBC television circa late 70's to mid- 80's ? I would especially love to have the first three which were broadcast LIVE . ) |

Alan Arkin was in a ridiculously entertaining film called "Magicians." Good movie, not great on the whole magic business bit but good nevertheless.

I recall that there was a teenage magician played by Scott Jacoby who was a major character in the Jody Foster movie "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane"(1976).

A few years back (pre-dvd) I found a copy at a K-Mart and was so happy. I got it home and although it didn't say onything on the box it was aparently a "tv cut" where the language was censored. For those of you that haven't seen it the "dummy" is a foul-mouthed s.o.b. so the editing really takes a lot away from the movie. That said this version is better than nothing but I can wait to see this title on dvd.
