Hi Guys,
I am looking for 2 things this go round. First - In every fire wallet, ignition type effect there is a wick material usually about 1" wide and cut to length. Anyone know what this material is called and where to get it? My thoughts have all run into dead ends. Second - has anyone made thier own ignitors, wire type? I am believing a simple push switch to a wire connected to + / - volts to make it glow... Anyone have experience with this... Can you recommend wire size for ignition area, voltage or batteries? Thanks for the input! |

The only fire wallet type effect I own does not use a wick so I am not sure if this is what you are looking for. If these folks don't have it I would be surprised. http://www.oillampman.com/Page15.html

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. Visualize Whirled Peas! |

Kerosene ignitors, if you have the room in the wallet to hold it and the battery. Glo-plugs are smaller, but they don't fire as fast.

I just replaced my ignitor in a fire bowl with nichrome wire I got at a Hobby Shop. Bare 1/4" of wire, overlap end of nichrome and bare wire, use some shrink tubing to hold together, repeat for other side. The 3 V that came with the bowl is OK but if doing something new I would go to a 9V battery. The shorter the wire the faster it heats up.

You might want to post this in the "Up IN Smoke" section.

It's all a compromise between the gauge of the nichrome and the size of the battery. The thinnest nichrome heats up quickest but becomes fragile faster too. Thicker stuff needs more juice to get it hot. Small batteries run down quicker. The shorter the piece of nichrome the faster it heats up. My self-lighting candle ebook has some specifications that work in that context but it's easy enough to experiment.

Personally I almost always use nichrome wire instead of a glow plug. You can attach to a wire with small clips or believe it or not can solder directly to the wire ( use flux paste ) and cover the connection with heat shrink and you will be in great shape.
Below is a clip of just that as I have adapted an ordinary dove pan to ignite without touching it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gekB9B1epjw Chuck Caputo |
