It does make sense, Catweazle. And I'd like to make it clear that I wasn't implying Brown fakes his class.
I'm just trying to figure out which English accents are considered to be the more "respectable" ones. |

I don't think there IS a respectable accent any more (used to be 'pucker' upper class but not any more because of shenanigans).
Derren Brown's accent I feel would best be described as what we call: 'Home Counties' which basically describes the regions in and around London and the South East. The interesting thing I think with regard to England in the last 30 years or so is that the country seems to lack national identity. A Scot is absolutely a Scot. I think that's the same with the Irish and Welsh. But England I think is no more. and might even be better regionalised for its own good.

I've noticed that outside of the south-east there is quite a lot of inverted snobbery from the peasants. Talking proper (and in some areas - simply wearing a coat) is sufficient reason for you to be labelled a wrongun. However - on balance, I still think its better to be home counties than anything else. Although Glaswegian might carry gravitas inside Glasgow, it doesn't do you any favours elsewhere. Luckily, there are home counties folk everywhere, and everyone can understand them.
As for Scotland - some would argue that Scottish national identity primarily concerns a unified front of hatred towards the English. England does have a national identity problem which needs fixing (somehow).

Derren has a neutral (i.e. non-specific) Home counties accent.

Derren's accent is basically posh boy + some profanities thrown in. (Yes even posh boys swear!)
Posh boy may sound like I'm being derogatory but it's not meant like that. It's more that he speaks clearly and annunciates his words and portrays an air of a good education. It's certainly not Bristolian as that is a very funny accent and as for London, the south London accent has more to do with the Black American gangsta culture than anything English. Even the white kids sound like Tu-Pac.
