Here's a nice, "scientific" argument for the existence of Santa:

I feel a bit foolish here, but I believed until I got to twelve. But doubts were creeping in. Funnily, that is five years longer than I believed in god.
My son believed until he was eight or nine. My daughter is now nine and is a firm believer, which I will do everything I can to preserve.

Since my wife is an Elementary School Teacher (Third Grade) most of the Kidz are 8 about to turn 9. That is when they will start to question Santa. Some Kidz still believe at 8-9 years old after that they know that Santa is not real.
So to answer your question most Kidz stop believing around age 8-9. Rodney

It is a hard day when you have to tell your kids about Santa. My son was older so he learned first. We wanted to tell him ourselves so that he didn't feel like he was the last kid in his class to know. The way we handled it was to tell him that Santa represented the love his parents have for him but small children can't understand that so we create Santa to represent that. We also told him that he could now help us keep the illusion going for his sister and we made him part of that. The hardest line though was when we said, Santa isn't real. Just like the tooth fairy. He looked at us with tears forming in his eyes and said "You mean there is no Tooth Fairy EITHER!"

I still believe, and still represent the "real Santa".

Santa, God, Tooth Fairy, Devil, Easter Bunny, Guardian Angel, etc. Pack 'o Lies the lot." That explains a lot. |

Everyday we navigate through a sea of deception,
lies and half truths upon this world in which we exist. The only truth is your empirical experience...nothing else. Best we can do is to have fun swimming through the waters of our existence. |

I'm hoping to break it easily and matter-of-factly, instead of making it a big deal.
I'll also explain that I do believe that Santa exists as a symbol, and maybe even as more, but just doesn't exist physically exist like people do. I've actually already had similar conversations with my daughter already who, for a while, was absolutely fascinated by Ganesha statues and pictures as well as Thor (we're reading an AMAZING collection of Thor stories btw, I highly recommend it if anyone is interested).

I have been able to extend the tradition as my daughter is 12 and still believes. Unless she caught onto the game and realizes as long as she pertends to believe she gets extra gifts.
