Yeah I picked up right away the kid asking for help was a little jerk, did not like the whole tone of his posting. Man, rudeness starts off at an early age nowadays - maybe he and his mamma can figure out how to build the table.

One big secret about finishes for stage props -- DON'T make them shiny!!!!!

Why?

Because you will have unwanted, distracting glare from the lights. A satin or matte finish looks much better on stage than a glossy finish.

When I painted my renaissance festival props, I used exterior grade house paint. In fact, I got some of the same paint that the renaissance festival had custom mixed for their stages. It all tied in very nicely. All my large props were built with the idea in mind that at any moment, there might be a downpour.

Still, the props looked very good in an actual theatre.

Some of the old-timers used cloth to cover their props. Others used formica. Amazing how well both of these work.

In answer to the original question -- "What am I doing wrong?"

Answer -- trying to be a magician.

Take up macrame.

But don't buy anything expensive.

It's funny but the more of a challenge something is the more they need to master it.
I remember when my father demanded that I quit magic because I broke the front window with an appearing cane so just watch as this young man decides to outdue us all and he eventually wins gold.

that would not have been one of the old metal appearing canes would it? I shoot mine through a wall. Those things were very well made but dangerous. I eventually sold mine to a friend when he first used it he broke a lamp or something. Talk about spring action, those old metal canes are no joke.
