Anyone here into Norse mythology?
As a kid I was very familiar with Greek/Roman Mythology, aspects of Hindu and Buddhist Mythology as well as aspects of Egyptian Mythology. It wasn't until I was older that I started getting into Norse mythology and it's been on-again off-again for me because in the past I have often had difficulty connecting with the characters. I believe this is a mixture of not hearing them when I was younger and not having many popular adaptations ("Rhinegold" by Stephan Grundy is very good for this IMO). Do other people feel like this? If so, why do you think that is? I was thinking of trying to write a graphic novel version of Egil's saga. I also thought it would be cool to do some of the Edda myths is graphic novel form; at first I wasn't sure if this would work but I saw a series of Greek god juvenile graphic novels that looked great yesterday and I think Norse stories would be awesome.

If my name was Snorri Sturluson, I would so totally rock
Unfortunately I can't help you much, but I do think that it is cool that Tolkien snagged a whole lot of material from Norse myth, and a bit from Beowulf too. Wagner's Ring Cycle is also pretty fab. Think I've got some reading to do.

I highly recommend Grundy's book if you're interested.
Also, I haven't read them but I think Diana Paxason has written several Norse novels which are probably good too. I like Tolkien, his dwarves are clearly the most. Or therm influenced, but the whole world outlay has a lot of similarities and the dwarf elf dynamic is parallel to the svartalfr and ljossalfr; and while Woden/Odin is portrayed differently in different eras and locations I think of him as being very similar to a darker version of Gandalf (Gandalf the white especially I guess, post Balrog fight).

Thanks for the tip on the Grundy book, seadog. I'll check my library.
Curious that Gandalf is a dwarf name in the Younger Edda. For the Tolkein-mad out there, here is an interesting passage from Snorri's Younger (or prose) Edda Quote:

The Icelandic Sagas are quite graphic and very discriptive.
On one trip to Iceland, I went on a tour with a historian to various locations based on the Sagas. They were able to identify many of the locations in the stories because of the detailed descriptions. Good luck.

That is SO cool!
I think the graphic descriptive nature of the sagas makes difficult to identify with sometimes, but would make it perfect for a graphic novel.

I was into Norse mythology a bit. As a kid, I had this book:
http://www.amazon.com/DAulaires-Norse-Gi......85236921 I must have read it fifty times as a kid. We moved, and it got lost in the shuffle. I recently exchanged homes with someone -- a perfect stranger, in fact, but that's another story -- and I found that book on their shelf. Got in that 51st read. |

That's a great book! One of the few that I've seen.
This is the one I just finished reading with my daughter: http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Thor-Th......07BWCDY6 It's very good and has really great illustrations.

I enjoy using Norse Mythology in my magic with runes and what not.
I've been to a few of the museums in Scandinavia that feature Norse/Viking artifacts. I love that stuff. It so cool to see those old rune stone carvings.

The Nephilim, you know them there giants that the bible speaks of, well they were the Old Norse giants, who lived in the caves, in high places. The giants up there in mountain studied the peoples for long, long times, watched their behaviour from above, studied astronomy, the stars, charted it all and let you know the seasons and they became the first gods. The first priests went up, got the info and brought it down from the, Nordic land of the dead, as they called up there. That's the word on the street.

The Nordic word Hella meant the dirt, the earth, mother earth Hella and when you died you went to Hell-a.

I didn't know Hella means dirt.
It is the name of the goddess of the dead who rules Hel/Nifelhel where most of those who do not die in battle go. Personally (just me, not hatin' just sayin') I am unimpressed with Ancient Aliens theories and even less impressed since I watched "Ancient Aliens Debunked" on YouTube. Thor being your favorite Avenger is good enough for me! Actually I think my graphic novel idea came soon after reading "Ultimate Thor" (my first Thor comic, very fun) and watching the Thor movie. I went back and forth between loving the movie and bein indifferent to it but I was imagining how awesome it would be to have the real stories but told in a modern storytelling style with all the great images of "ultimate Thor" comics (I like Jack Kirby, but that wouldn't be as cool IMO).

That was weird (wyrd?) above. I tried to edit my post and seem to have quoted and reposted it!
Tommy, That looks like a good book, thank you. I used to have Thorsson's book of Troth, which I never connected with at all. I also used to have Kveldulf Gundarsson's book "Teutonic Religion" which I thought had a much more organic feel to it (Thorsson's Setian leanings I assume make an organic feeling less than desirable).
