I think it's the concern of travelling with live fishes. The robotic fish I bought were the clown fishes and they do behave very real when dropped into the water.
Unfortunately the ones available are marine fishes but they are very colorful and look very good. They are less than 10 usd.I think I'll buy more when I go to Toys R Us again.

These Robo Fish are as cool as they can be! I think I need one of these! What fun at a holiday party to drop one in someone's glass magically! Gotta love it!

Having said that, if you enjoy "do-it-yourself" magic, you can make any of the pet store plastic fish move about as if alive by employing invisible thread and some of the same moves used with the old "Judy the Mouse."

Jim,
Actually only #1 requires the special bowl. #2 & #3 ARE self powered! I imagine that is why #3 cost 70 euros You can get #2 for under 20 bucks http://www.amazon.com/Robo-Fish-Electron......obo+fish |

I ordered the one from Amazon.com to try it out. When you add in $5 for shipping, it comes to over $20, but still seems like a good deal if it does what you want. I am thinking of painting over the clown stripes to make it a more gold-fish critter rather than an exotic critter that people will want to look at closely. I'll let you know if it meets my expectations when it arrives. I figure you only need the movement from one fish to get the other pet-store imitation fish in the bowl to appearing to be swimming also.

My Robo Fish arrived and I spent a delightful afternoon playing with my new toy pet. It's made by ZURU toys ( http://www.zuru.com ) and it comes with a spare set of batteries (four batteries in all), those tiny batteries used in remote units and such. Anyway, two are already inside the fish and a spare two are packaged outside. I checked with my local Rite Aid and they have those size batteries (1.5 volt A76 or LR44 alkaline), as well as Radio Shack when the need arises for more.
As Autumn Morning Star suggested, just drop it in a glass of water... but make sure it's a big glass because these fish are a handful and not tiny. I used a large measuring cup as a test goldfish bowl and as soon as the fish hits the water, it somehow (dare I say magically?) turns the fish on and it goes through a pattern of swimming and wiggling movements. It doesn't just have one set of movements. It starts by flapping its tail like crazy, then pauses and flaps a bit more slowly, then erratically and finally back to fast flapping. It also takes a nose dive to the bottom of the glass at some point. It will take me awhile to learn its habits, but that's the fun of a new toy. Anyway, it really will look like a real live fish from a very short distance. I'm still going to eventually paint out the clown stripes and make it look more like an ordinary goldfish so once people see it, they will recognize it as a pet store goldfish and not an exotic clown fish that requires more scrutiny. When you take it out of the water, it turns off by itself, but needs to be dried ASAP, which I guess could be done by dropping it into a pocket onto a water absorbent cloth. You can also pretend that it is still moving with a small bit of pantomime. I can see it being used in Ariel Fishing and it could easily be concealed in the handle of a fishing pole as Okito et al used to do. This may just make me the star of the forthcoming Christmas and New Years Eve Parties if I don't overdo it.

Jim,
Robo fish sounds really cool. Is it approximately the size of a gold fish? I'm guessing that it wouldn't fit into a TT, would that be correct? I too would paint the stripes so it looked like a goldfish. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Unless you have a thumb-tip for the Jolly Green Giant, I don't think this would fit. It's about the size of a large goldfish ( 1 1/4 inches high, 3/4 inches wide, 3 inches long). But it's not a live fish, so you can stick it with pins and needles and it won't feel a thing. The first thing I did was pierce it with a hot needle in an inconspicuous spot that didn't go through any delicate machinery, and so now I have a loop of invisible sewing thread attached to it for manipulating it like a handkerchief ball. I could also embed a magnet inside it so it would stick to a PK ring for palming, but that's overkill and the weight would have to be carefully considered to avoid messing up its swimming.

3 AAA Batteries tell you that the power source is in the cap, not the fish. However, if you want to produce the entire bowl of water and goldfish, the advantage is that it is sealed with a cap. Qua-Fiki could use one of these as a finale for his "Go Fish Derby" found in his e-Book of "Go-Fish Card Tricks." It would be better than the Dollar Store version he now uses because it would not spill, but for $23 bucks plus shipping, I think on his budget he'll stay with his Dollar Store fish bowl (the battery is in the base in that one). He has his eyes on my new Robo-fish with the internal batteries, but that's out of his price range, too. I told him I'd give it to him if he can come up with a better way to use it for magic, so he's thinking about it.
Dang! He read the above as soon as I posted it and shot back with a text message: "I need the Robo Fish on a playing card like your Cow trick. The fish will disappear from the card and jump off into a glass of water." The Cow trick he's talking about is in Hardboard and Duct Tape Magic Book 2. I think I may just have to give up my new toy so he can work on it.

Aw, I wanted a clown fish (think Nemo)and they sent me a red robo shark. I will comment when they send me a replacement.

When I was a kid, there were toy submarines and scuba divers that were powered by a dissolving tablet, that was placed in the toy before putting it in water. I wonder if anyone makes them as a fish.

Knmagic, the one you posted from Amazon only works in the bowl they provide (or at least using the lid that is sized for that bowl)
