This story surely isn't the greatest in the world, but I liked how it turned out, so I thought I'd share it here:
Yesterday I was in the mall's food court enjoying a nice meal, when a mall employee approaches me. "Excuse me," he said. (At this point I was afraid he was going to reproach me for hanging out at the food court with a bunch of my friends, but it turns out I needn't have worried.) He explained that he saw me do a magic trick for my friends the week before, and was wondering if he could bring his friends by at closing time and have me show them the same trick. I gladly agreed. (The magic trick he was referring to was "Homing Stones" from the book "A Book of Magic for Young Magicians: The Secrets of Alkazar" by Allan Zola Kronzek. I discovered by accident that the trick works quite well with dry pinto beans, so occasionally I carry a few around with me.) At the end of the night, when the mall was closing, the employee brought about six other employees with him to watch my trick. Before the "Homing Stones" trick, I decided to do a simple sleight-of-hand coin trick where I drop a coin down a (supposed) hole in my head, and cough out the coin. It wasn't the trick they expected, but they were entertained nonetheless. Finally, I performed the "Homing Stones" trick (using broad hand gestures, as not all of them spoke fluent English), and they responded very well to it. As I was leaving, a few of them thanked me for the tricks, and I thanked them back. Being a magician is one of the few hobbies/professions where audiences are necessary for the craft, so I really was appreciative of them. I often have to ask my peers if they're willing to be an audience to a magic trick (fortunately I'm rarely turned down), so it was nice to have an audience "self-assemble" for me for a change. |

Just goes to show you that you should always be prepared to perform anytime anyplace. Well done!
