The manual (free to download) has been updated and is available from the Manuals page on the Subversive Circuits web site. When you order, we now also send you a free set of performance notes written by Freddie Valentine to peruse while awaiting delivery. Please let me know if I've forgotten to send it to anyone.

Al,I think you are missing the beauty of this!
Believers, will believe! If you used the radio, without the EVP mode,it is a instrument that has been used by paranormal investigators! They can google 'Frank's Box' & 'Ghost Box',and see it being used on youtube. There is "how to make' videos on line as well! So,being tipped as a electronic trick, I don't think it will be. IMHO Then, you use the EVP mode, then things are sure to happen! I have a way,I would prefer the EVP mode, works! I will be having Jon,check into this, for mine! I would tell the participants,to google away on GB/F'sB...They will think, they heard the real deal!

Younger audiences have grown up in an electronic world. And even some of the older generation have been plugged in, tuned on, network upped and it takes a lot more "innocence" to fool them. I'm sorry, my point is, if I was expecting a mentalist to fool me with EVP... then the very object in hand is what I would sense was tricked out. |

With respect, Al, the people who attend seances are a self-selecting cross-section of society that actively wants to believe. This is a magic forum. Of course it looks like a trick to you!

Many different types of people attend seances, for many different reasons. They are not all starry eyed believers.
Al is absolutely right, most people actively suspect electronic things of trickery, even if they don't come out and say it. The format you would use this in must be considered. If you use this in a context where you are a known magician, then this problem will arise with every prop you use. However, if they don't suspect you, why would they suspect your props? Perhaps you never intended to use the radio for EVP, it just happened to be there. Then in conversation you bring up the concept of EVP and how people experimented with it. But, do not overtly mention using the radio for this purpose, instead allow your audience to get the idea for themselves. Let someone else suggest giving it a try, by implanting the suggestion for them to hit on as "their idea". I can think of plenty of examples where you distance yourself from the prop, thereby imparting innocence to the object. The first step is achieving believability yourself, then once you have earned a degree of trust you can go farther. |

I've worked for paranormal event companies who have used regular ghost boxes. No guests ever questioned the radio or asked if it was faked in any way. Essentially the radios *weren't* gimmicked like Jon's, BUT they were still digital radios. No-one thought ill of it. Why would they? I suggest that it depends on your performance persona and how the radio is presented. The ghost box is an accepted method of spirit communication already.

A person doesn't loose the ability to think like a spectator just because we are now performers. If we use your logic, then none of us can really know how an effect is going play, so we may as well just be told by the dealers that this or that item is best for us. And what gives you the ability to think like a spectator when you are creating these effects? Or don't you think about it? |

I don't know where this bile is coming from, but the Devil's Radio has been thoroughly play tested, and comes with performance notes from a top flight seance performer who wrote them based on his experiences of using it in performance. That's how I know it works.

I wonder if Al realises that the ghost box is already out there, being used by paranormal groups, investigators and events companies for the purpose of spirit communication? Jon hasn't conjured this idea from thin air - he has taken an existing piece of kit and 'tampered' with it. The ghost box is already in use exactly the same way as the ouija board is.

I wouldn't say what Al is saying is Bile. It is his opinion, and he is not wrong.
Many people consider these paranormal groups and investigators on shaky grounds when it comes to "credibility" by quite a few people. (Almost everyone I've ever spoken to in fact.) They are often considered a tad too credulous when it comes to their liberal acceptance of EVP. Quite a few "normal" people would leave and say "Yeah that radio thing was fake, or just interference". It doesn't matter if they are even correct, all that matters is the illusion is ruined because they BELIEVE they know the answer. There is nothing wrong with addressing these worries. Just because these groups use it, doesn't mean it will fly for EVERY audience in every situation. Considering many people would indeed think it was fake, a smart performer knows HOW to frame his performance to handle this. This can be as simple as not acting guilty about it. This exact same thing can be said for the Ouija! Many people do not believe the Ouija works, they think "Yeah someone was just pushing it." Even if no one says it during your performance, they might just be too polite to blurt it out while at your show. Ultimately it can easily be used, but like all things, you should carefully consider whether or not it suites your style. Proof is that many people do in fact use these things routinely. And yes, some people suspect interference or trickery with the real Radios too. BUT like any tool, it will not enable you to craft a fine piece of furniture. Your performance is the selling point. Ultimately I think you can convince anyone of anything under the right circumstances, but its up to you to make it happen. |
