Al - you do sometimes have a way of being quite abrupt and terse, whether you mean to sound it or not (i've said this before to you elsewhere)....especially to english ears I think...
I've seen the radio in the flesh, a few of the guys posting have one and used it in the field (well, not a field, a paid gig) - it is a standard, middle priced radio that is "just a radio", and works as such.... I do find it interesting that you "suspect" this - but use other items from other dealers with no problem, that look unlike anything else...have you ever had people be suspicious of those items that you've used?

A lot of people have problems when it comes to using overtly electronic apparatus in performances.
Likewise some mentalists feel they can't use playing cards during their performances either. |

No, no, no...I wasn't asking for that reason... I was asking because if you can make something that looks so unearthly and odd/old/bizarre...and no one asks questions...
Then a simple radio (in its original box) would surely be ok too? Just trying to follow the logic 'tis all...

There's an excellent review of the Devil's Radio in the new issue of Mystic Menagerie, written by someone who uses it in paying seance performances.
If you've not bought your copy of what's rapidly establishing itself as the premier journal of bizarre magic, get along here: http://themysticmenagerie.com/Latest%20Issue.html |

As if I need further convincing about the TDR.
but yes, love the Menagerie. Thanks for the note about the new issue. |

OK now I have to add my 2 cents. At first, I was really excited about this. I have used a "real ghost box" in my seances. My personal opinion is that it is BS but it did sound creepy sitting in the dark at a spooky place with this spooky sounding modified radio to communicate with the dead. It added to the atmosphere but is not something I would regularly use. While I applaud the efforts on this device, I do not like the fact that you can not use it as a "real ghost box" and then switch to the gimmicked mode without having to remove the batteries. Please correct me if I am wrong on this.
I also do not like that the radio is no longer scanning when it is in gimmicked mode. Many people who are familiar with a "ghost box" know that the radio must be in scan mode to operate. I was ready to purchase this but due to the points that I stated, I will not be making a purchase at this time. Does this make me "Bile" too? I hope not. While Al and I have every right to our own opinions, this does not make them right or wrong. I am sure that this is a great device with the right presentation, etc. but it is not for me. Also, how does one become a "professional ghost hunter"? I would think that by earning your primary income as a "ghost hunter" would make you a pro. Why can't you use the term EVP's? Electronic Voice Phenomenon to me is singular so how do you say it plural? Jamie

Phenomena is the plural of phenomenon.
EVP is both plural and singular. |

Thanks for the clarification but I will still use the term EVPs.

And while we are having a 'word power' moment, I don't see why there has been such a hubub over the word bile--it only means angry or irritated. To say that Al's comment demonstrated bile only indicates that it seemed a bit harsh, or angry. There is nothing insulting in being labelled bilious or having one's comment taken as being filled with bile. Such a response is not dismissive or insulting but rather descriptive only. Al's comment was a tad vituperative in nature, and Jon merely noted the fact in his response. Al replied with more bile and a bit of vulgarity, which he himself correctly labelled as also being bilious (occasioned by anger or irritation). One might dislike the nature of an effect, but Al seems positively to hate this one (and he made no bones about saying so). Such a response is, by its very nature, bilious. There is no insult it observing that fact. Jon was only factually stating the obvious when he wondered where all of Al's bile originated concerning this effect. It was, in essence, a fair (if heated) exchange of ideas until Al took an unwarranted exception to the word. Then it briefly verged on the ungentlemanly. Now back to TDR. BC

I believe the misunderstanding may come from the word bile itself having two meanings.
One referring to bile discharged from the body. This is also the more common interpretation I believe. |

In fact, would people like to be able to switch in and trigger EVP in ghost box mode as the default?

Thanks for the clarification Jon. Send me your email via PM and we can discuss. I do like the idea and I do believe it has a place in our line of work.
Thanks! Jamie

A momentary reflection should have demonstrated, however, that Jon was employing the emotive and metaphoric use of the word rather than the clinical (as, in point of fact, the clinical usage makes little sense in context and therefor insists upon the literary rather than the literal). Interestingly, yellow bile was once thought to dominate the emotion of anger (or 'choler' to give it its 'humours' designation; the word derives from the Greek chole) and so we have both the literal (bodily fluid) and metaphoric (anger) merging. Hence, 'choler' was (and still is) synonymous with anger, ire, rage, wrath, gall, bile, passion, etc., and this is clearly Jon's meaning when he employed the word bile in the given context. There was therefore no good reason for Al's umbrage, for clearly no insult was intended.
