President Obama and his Family will be spending 20 day's vacation in Hawaii at the cost (to taxpayers) of 4 Million Dollars.
At a time when we are facing a 16+ Trillion Dollar National Debt, too many people out of work, Medicare about to be messed with and facing higher taxes and who knows what else, is this the time for our President to take such an expensive trip? I am lucky that I have a decent job and have not been unemployed since 1988 but I am barely making ends meet AND I can't afford a vacation and have not had a vacation in 3 years (vacation time off, yes but can't afford to go anywhere). I am not saying the President should not take a vacation, what I am saying is I think he and his Family can go to Hawaii for a lot cheaper that a cool million bucks each AND seeing how the Nation is not in the best state at the moment, It might be wise to keep a lid on things and not broadcast such an extravegent adventure. President has said many many times, we must all sacrifice and work together to get the U.S. back on an even keel. What is he doing? How many people could benefit from the money that he is using for this trip. Why can't he use his own money (I must use my own). I just think this is cosmetically bad. Iven

Security is expensive, and there appears to be very little presidential down-time no matter who is in office. John

I feel horrible that I started this post. I did not realize that all of us are invited to join his vacation and share the fun.

People talk about the price of Presidential vacations. Take into consideration that the entire family is heavily protected by Secret Service teams, that the local police department and sheriff's departments of wherever they are going is now working overtime and will be reimbursed by the government, that also state law enforcement agencies are now on overtime, the hotel or where ever they are staying will probably have to surrender an entire three to four floors and ensure they have enough staff on hand, the expenses can mount, no one is going to work for free. Then there is the travel expenses, I am sure all my credit cards combined could not gas up Air Force 1.
Peace and Godspeed.

Curiously, the flight of Air Force One to Hawaii is the largest single expense ... Apparently that by itself 'costs' over $3.2 millon (based on last year's reports). From one report last year, "When considering fuel, repairs, maintenance, and other “flight consumables,” Air Force One, the president’s airplane, costs $179,750 per hour to fly. This cost doesn’t even include the pilot or other airmen’s salaries." So a lot of that money would still be spent, no matter where he vacations / flys to. A single long flight to Hawaii may overall even be cheaper than 2 or 3 shorter flights restricted to the mainland (due to fewer repairs, maintenance checks, and consumables).

The trip costing 4 million, and the President splashing out 4 million on the trip are two different things. Everyone needs a break, and the leader of the western world is no different. But the guy needs to be protected, and he needs the machinary of state nearby in case of unexpected events. So that costs. It is the price of success, and of having a thriving democracy. If the president was insisting on bathing in asses milk while feeding cavier to his dogs, then you would have cause for complaint. As it is, you don't.

It was reported in the first year of the Obama administration during a trip to NYC and staying at one of the posh hotels, where she ordered more than a thousand dollars in caviar in one night. The story mentioned her fondness for caviar. I remembered it well because I like caviar too and I remember thinking, "It must me nice to be able to order a thousand dollars worth of caviar on my dime when I can't afford it myself."

The same people who are upset by the Presidential security detail, are the ones so outraged that a middle east consulate wasn't protected 24/7 against "rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades, AK-47 and FN F2000 NATO assault rifles, diesel canisters, mortars, and heavy machine guns and artillery mounted on gun trucks*".
And yes as pointed out by mastermindreader; How many vacations has this President taken compared to the previous? Please show me links to the outrage then. *wiki

In terms of cost of vacation, as I mentioned before, the biggest cost is Air Force One. So, to answer your question, one need only identify which former President spent the most days regularly jetting to and from his normal place of rest, let's say a ranch, to make one day photo-op appearances elsewhere in the country.

Seems the amount of objection raisd about a presidential vacation schedule is in direct proportion to how much you agree or disagree with him.
Bob puts out the obligatory shot of "well they did worse" so we are covered there. I am shocked it took so long. In reality I do not object to the deal on any gounds. It is what it is. Expensive? Well sure but our chief executive needs to be protected even if I disagree with him. The perks of office. We are not going to save the country by taking away presidential vacation time. The only flaw I could see is if a deal isn't reached. But nit picking vacation schedule dule of ANY president is petty and pointless. In a related story I also don't care how much he golfs.

I'm not convinced it is really even all that expensive. Many of the Air Force One related costs (e.g., maintenance and repair and pilot salaries), which apparently comprise the bulk of the overall vacation cost, are going to occur, vacation or not. Just my opinion.
I am amused how some people (who may or may not have posted in this thread) talk about how ending the so-called Bush tax cuts will save 'only' the 'small sum' of $80 billion a year and use that as a main talking point about why the cuts should be preserved, and then get all outraged about these vacation costs.
