I've noticed over the last few weeks and incredibly high number of newcomers to the Penny forum recently. Why this surge? I noticed most are foreign, was there something that created this sudden influx?
Also for those of you that are new, welcome, but please be sure to read the rules and guidelines and take a moment to understand the dynamics of this place, rather than just jumping in. I think that would clear up much of the exposure, and methods issues that have been prominent lately. |

Still waiting for the newer sticky to be re-instated...
when we suggested we re-write it a little, I said that maybe someone else could volunteer to sort it out as I did the previous one...i don't think there were any takers...
I've asked to be banned

I am definitely not a newbie and I have been reading a lot on Penny for the past years. I don't really comment much compare to reading. Trying to stay active on Penny to share views and ideas since I just got a tablet and it would be much easier to log on here.

If a guy has made 50 posts about sponge balls somewhere else in the Café, should you trust him with your "Inner Thoughts"? I plan on being extra careful what I type here.
New and old members, I wrote the following for myself as a sort of prayer, though you can also recite it to yourself, to a friend here who will keep you accountable or even to your refrigerator before posting it there with magnets. Regardless of your stated world view, it's full of reminders many of us often need before logging in: Help me keep my mouth shut and my ears open… To seek advice long before I give it… To respect my elders for their knowledge and to be grateful for their kindness in sharing… To remember the secrets passed on to me contain the seeds of wonder, born of another's hard work; seeds which are to be valued above my own financial gain… To humble my mounting ego and see myself and my performances rightly, esteeming them neither lower nor higher than I should… And to remember always that “the dream comes through much effort and the voice of a fool comes through many words”.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

I used to read these forums a lot in the past few years and I just decided to join so I can give back a little where I can.

Help me keep my mouth shut and my ears open… Very good! I too agree this post should be in a sticky! I came here not following any crowd that I know of... I've been participating for years in a few French forums and some people there sometimes mentionned "the Café"; I got curious. I didn't come here to sell anything, nor to look for exposed secrets. As a matter of fact, I love to share the ideas I come up with and find it difficult not to be able to openly discuss and work like I do IRL or on another (much much smaller!) forum! But with people here ready to give away ideas not their own, I understand mentalists are reluctant to talk about the works of their work... That's for smaller groups. Well, there's a lot of interesting stuff here; various points of view, advice, pointers... Thanks to all providers )

Foreign to where? Are we here in England foreigners or is it just reserved for places where English in not their first language? (Like America for instance. )

I guess we have to be new so that we can get old. Shame it takes so long. Not sure if English is the first language in all of England either.

I am not new, but new-ish. I've certainly been around long enough to feel that 9 whole posts is pretty sad.
But this topic has, in its own way, been on my mind. Between fear of exposure, feeling like a newbie despite any real-life experience because my post-count is so low and an unexpectedly high amount of trolling on these forums, I just don't feel very welcome to participate. I can be an overly sensitive guy, and these are definitely MY issues that I need to work through. But, even so, I find it unlikely that I am alone in feeling pressure to join in but also are reluctant to do so. So, this might be reasoning for why it seems some of us are coming out of the woodwork. Or not. Just my penny's worth. To the nice and welcoming folks: I know you are there and thank you. |

Mr Malloy
It's easy and you don't always have to talk about secrets to have a conversation on here. You can post about aspects of performance for example. Either asking the best way to present a routine or giving your views as to how you think a routine could or should be presented. Of course there will always be loud posters who will tell you that you are wrong just for the sake of it, but more often than not they do have an interesting point to say about your post. You are then free to agree or disagree with what they have said and to use their advice or ignore it. That is the good side of this place; you can have a seed of an idea and others can post suggestions that can form a great routine far beyond your initial idea. Keep calm and carry on!

Thanks for that, Shrubsole.
Maybe now that I've gotten it off my chest, I can put on my big boy pants. And, thank you as well for that great affirmation, Mike. It'll join my other dry-erase scribblings on the fridge tonite. |
