Hi all,
I couldn't find a better place for my question than this, so my apologies for maybe being OT. I am searching for some advice on speaker training. I would like to improve my voice and the way I talk, especially when standing in front of a large audience; I'm talking about stuff similar to singing lessons, just for, well, talking. So is there anyone here who can recommend me some book which he or she found useful? I don't know if I made myself clear enough, please let me know if you need further info to help me. best, dan |

Hi Dan, you may be interested in Jonathan Altfeld's "Finding your irresistible voice" CD set (http://www.altfeld.com/mastery/products/iv1.html) and if you like the first CD set, you can look at the second set as well. He focuses on voice quality, intonation, volume etc. Not so much on the crafting of your words using language patterns. If you are looking for how to structure you words and language, you can consider Kenton's "Wonder Words" CD set which is focused on how to use words to improve your presentation in magic.
Of course, there are many other non-magic related resources on how to improve public speaking skills, I think Dale Carnegie has one book on public speaking too. |

Thanks Alex, that's what I am searching for - I will search for Altfelds CDs. The mentioned Carnegie Book I already have.
There are several reasons why I hesitate buying the knepper book (aside from the point that crafting my words was not my primary intent with this query): I already have two knepper books (ultimately under and mind reading) and had some trouble getting through them. In my opinion there is too much self-adulation and beating around the bush in them, and it would be nice to have an index or a table of contents. I don't care that they look like being typeset with MS-Works 1.0 but I really had some trouble finding a structure in those books. Another problem, and I should have started with that, is that most of the time I will be presenting my effects in german and I fear kneppers magical words won't work when translated. I might be wrong with that last assumption. |

Gday Dan,
I am a speaker in Australia and listed with a few international agencies as well and I would love to share with you what I did to get me to where I am today. I took singing classes when I was younger for nearly 2 years, now I could never really sing but all that training really helped me with my confidence and also finding my true voice and! it also taught me how to project my voice. Right now even with out a microphone I can project my voice really far, I really believe it was the singing classes that got me to where I am today. I am so glad you posted this, it just makes me realise how important your voice is when you are performing magic, it really makes up a big part of your showmanship. Being able to change your tonality etc is so crucial to making people "feel" your performance. Dan if you are really serious about this I really recommend looking for a local singing teacher, if this is something you wish to do professionally I really recommend it! There are no short cuts with this. Good luck my friend, now I want to show you a quick little video that I have that I use a one of my promo reels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GufEcAjey......embedded I was no where near where I am today 8 years ago, but I feel like each and everyday now Im improving Good luck Dan and feel free to PM me anytime, I would be happy to help in anyway I can mate. Wishing you all the best my friend. Cheers

Nice video, vinh. Is that explosions in the sky that I sense in the background?
Anyway, you have a very good sounding voice, how much of that is trained and how much a gift? In know this questions sounds silly but is there a video of you before you got a pro speaker? You know, I cannot find words to describe this, your voice is a voice one likes to listen to and that's what I am searching for. thanks so much, dan |

A speech teacher or voice lessons is the way to go. Another example of proper training, when I ran track, we had a very gifted hurdler but couldn't get his timing down. Coach sent him for ballet lessons thus a star was born.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

Check it out: I am a client and a testimonial http://www.winnipegvocaltraining.com/ind......singing/ He does vocal coaching via skype a good deal these days for clients all over the world. Contact him for a consult and let him know I sent you. He taught me a lot about projection while staying relaxed.

Toastmasters is great and I have been a part of them a few times over the years. Vocal coaching is one-on-one and is specific to the mechanics of the body and vocalization. Each has it's place.

I work with performers in our field and professional speakers on presentations, from the technical elements (speech, body language, blocking) to content (research, scripting, ad-libbing), to character development. There are a few Café members with whom I have worked - they may or may not choose to chime in here.
I see my role as not being dissimilar to what I did for more than 25 years in the radio business: directing on-air talent to highlight their natural strengths. My suggestions (other than working with someone like me), is to get in front of people to speak/perform, at any and every opportunity. Whether it be local theater, open-mic night at a comedy club, improv, Toastmaters, or even something as simple as reading to seniors; the act of doing, is what matters most. Along the way, be sure to get continual feedback from a trusted source. You just can't learn this stuff from a book. And one final comment. The single biggest mistake I see people make in trying to develop their skills as a speaker, is to abandon whatever quirks they might have in pursuit of some kind of ultra-slick Tony Robbins-like stage persona. Huge mistake. The most successful performers bring their idiosyncracies to the stage with purpose. e |
