I just got my Glance mags in the mail yesterday and I opened it up and took a look at the instructions before I ever took a look at the magazines. I thought to myself as most of you probably did, "Man, this is so freaking genius!" And then I started going through the magazines. I open up "The Financial Insider" and I notice the lay out looks great. First page is a picturesque view and then you have the table of contents which is equally impressive. I then turn to the first article and I find something rather amusing. An editor or proof reader may not be able to find it, but I did because I am a avid sports fan (Go Chicago Cubs). When talking about the Baseball team as this article clearly does its the Boston "Red Sox" and not Red Socks. This is not in any way a set back to this amazing mind reading trick and it probably would fly over anyone's head in context of the routine but like I said before I did find it a little amusing. Don't let this ever discourage you from picking this up though, this is a gem and easily in the top of the tricks released in 2012.

Glance is so good - some of you who know me by now recognize that when I REALLY like something, I tend to go a little overboard. Sorry, that's just me lol.
I'm gushing about GLANCE because the EASE of performance is exquisite. This allows for 99% of your energy to be expended on honing your performance. I've done this about 50 times since getting it - not once has it failed me or has ANYONE suspected the beautiful magazines (obviously no Red Socks/Sox fans!). There are three great methods for getting the little thing you need to know the word chose - I love the 2nd method best. So clean, you never even touch or pump the main word - all yes all the way, with not a single no needed. The convenience and light weight of magazines is also superb - I may evern take these to strolling gigs once in awhile. This is my fave of 2012 - based on the quality, price and value received. This thread will likely be much longer as more get their paws on this little gem.

Performed this last night. Reactions were great. However, immediately after the reveal, the spectator grabbed the magazine off the table and discovered the workings. Any specific ideas how to prevent this? I know audience management needs to be used, but, especially with grabby friend spectators, it is very hard to prevent them from wanting to see the magazine again. Even if he didn't grab it, I think he would have probably asked to see it again. I guess I could ring in a clean dupe.

That's the difference between performing for friends/family and a real audience. With a real audience it is much easier to convince that what you are doing is real as opposed to friends/family who know who you are making it harder to convince them. (Especially if you just all of a sudden started doing such things, although, it can be done)If this was the case, I would have gone into something else shortly there after. I also find creating an interesting topic of conversation to grab their attention while not allowing them to want to inspect the mag/book helps as well.

If this is done as a one off you may have trouble managing the audience. Ideally before pulling out the mags you should have already established your ability. I don't have this yet but before doing something like this I may do something like Hollywood or bust, kioku or just something with a nail writer or maybe a drawing dupe (the less "proppy" the better). Once you have demonstrated the ability to read minds the heat is on you not the props. If this is being done in a casual setting then I'd introduce the mags as an afterthought. For instance say "Let me try something else, do you have a book with you? No? Oh well I do have some mags with me, I guess those would work just as well". If you can have those mags in a newsagent or bookstore bag even better. Likewise if you are doing this at home have them in your magazine rack.
Another subtlety is to introduce the mags and say I want you to take one of these mags and find a page you like and tear it out, oh no wait a minute I haven't finished reading them yet. ok on second thoughts just open one of them to any page and think of a word make it a big word then close the mag and put both back in the bag so I can't tell which one you looked at. By the time you reveal the word they should already be convinced that these mags are just regular mags. If they are grabbing the mags after the event it's because they were already suspicious of the mags before the event but at that point they didn't know what to look for. The important thing is not to fall into the trap of over-proving. Mark |

I have really enjoyed this thread, having just purchased Glance and used it in a cabaret for the first time last night. My own thoughts are, in no particular order:
1. Yes this is a high quality, well-thought out effect. I think it is priced very fairly for the amount of work that goes into it. I hope that registered purchasers will be able to buy replacements as I can see mine wearing out quite quickly! 2. I do think I need to take in the magazines before revealing the word. 3. The 2-mag version saves the time taken to do an equivoque process and further convinces the audience that you could have used ANY magazine. 4. The size is a mystery, I agree. With so much thought and planning going into these items, it would have been easy to produce slightly smaller mags. 5. The larger font size is welcome, though I nearly pulled out of doing it last night as the lighting was very low. ALWAYS choose someone in a well-lit area, preferably wearing glasses. Maybe take a torch if you don't have a backup plan, or use the torch function on their phone. 6. Having only 8 FWs is absolutely not a problem. Although I go for the traditional 'letter then word' reveal, it is now possible to do a mul***** O** should you wish. 7. The current issue of TIME has Obama on the front (now one of my mags does too curiously) which is excellent and topical and worth a passing comment which further subliminaly plants the idea that the mags are genuine. 8. I agree this isn't something to open with. First establish yourself as someone who can read minds, then do this. I would hesitate to put it in a magic act which uses trick props as they would assume the mags were just another 'trick'. Ahem. 9. The long-arm stapler is a must. I have gaffed a few magazines in my time and it is just a useful mentalist's tool to have in the locker! 10. The no-pump idea is genius and mentalists will appreciate the fact that it gives lots of 'yes's before the big reveal. 11. I realise not everyone goes out and performs live, but this would be the perfect thing to have sitting around on your coffee table for when friends come round and say 'go on then, show us something!' 12. The fact that not all the words are nouns is actually a PLUS; I don't want to expose more than necessary, but experienced mentalists will appreciate that words laden with emotion, which lots of the FWs are, are ideal for making the revelation more personal and like a reading. So sorry - this wasn't supposed to be a long post when I started it, especially for my first post, but somehow trying something in front of an audience makes you look at it differently I guess. So don't buy this if you work as a mentalist in SE England - I want it all to myself!!!!! x |

Any more feedback or reviews of GLANCE?
C'mon, some of you guys must have gotten this under the tree this year Incidentally, NEWSWEEK Magazine in the United States is about to print its last magazine next week...then, "poof" - digital only. Grab one soon as they do make a nice cover when slightly trimmed a bit.

Both my copies arrived today ha, serves me right for buying two before receiving any
obviously haven't had much time to do anything with them yet but I'm happy so far - the content is much better than I thought it would be though there are a couple of pages you can't use, but that's not an issue the booklet has some good information included too on different thoughts, a lot of work has gone into this release and I'm confident it will be a winner for me

When you guys replace the covers doesn't page 1 look odd?
It won't match? |
|||||||||
BatsMagic Inner circle New York 1052 Posts |
Good point there, David- the inside front cover and page 1 are a two-page ad with a large photo spread out over both pages in both magazines. If the cover is replaced, they will not match!
I was originally thinking about using the supplied covers; this may have just sealed that deal for me. If you don't mind my asking, how did you handle that, saysold? Or is it just not really noticeable to a spectator unless they are examining it real carefully? |

OK, welll a few people have already PM'd me about this same issue/question.
Ys it is true that replacing the cover will mean that the fistr 2 and last 2 pages won't look 100% matched since they are for ads that continue from one page to the next. However, I personally have not found this to be an issue at all since the ads look so real and generic (one if for the Maldives and the other I forget). When I hand these out I have not once had anyone question the authenticity of the magazines. In retrospect maybe the designers would have been wiser to use single page pseudo "ads" on these pages - but again, I think that the overall look of the magzines - the fonds, the paper & stock texture (which is a perfect match), the articles, the writing, the ads... means that the liklihood of anyone ever noticing the slight mismatch is probably slim and none. I do think replacing the covers is the best way to go - I have ststes that too many times, but I think that by using a regular cover it helps the spectator to take the magazine itself for granted and simply focus on their word choice and the instructions of the performer. I do GLANCE 4-5 times a day and it gets fantastic reactions... the reactions are most dependent like any mentalism effect on the creativity of the reveal and the performer.

I agree it is great. I don't mind the covers it comes with.
I do find it funny that people scrutinise these magazines for anything out of the ordinary. Then they replace the covers to make the inside pages not match Weird bunch, magicians lol |

The magazines should look perfect, so it does look odd when you just replace the covers.
Why didn't they think of this? And, why the size discrepancy? Other than that, this is probably the best magazine test ever. Robert |

I had previously purchased TruTest and was disappointed for a variety of reasons but I was lucky enough to get this for Christmas from the wife.
Glance is simply brilliant ... probably the best effect I got in 2012. If Vanishing Inc do decide to produce more magazines to accompany the existing ones then I'll definitely be picking them up. Regards, Laurence. |
