As someone not from the U.S. Could someone tell me why these are so hard to find? I thought they were just regular coins that people used everyday? Have they been taken out of circulation?

Half dollars are not used as everyday coins in the us.
the lack of them is from collectors and hoarders.they can be obtained easily but some banks do not keep them on a everyday basis. |

I've been in the US for almost ten years now, and I discover the half dollars coins recently when I went back to magic... I was aware of the older silver dollars that are not in circulation anymore but not the current 1/2.
I don't even know what coins they are using in Europe now for magic... In my earlier coins activity the 5 Fr coins was the perfect size, but with the Euro, the 2 Euros coins are smaller and thicker. The thickness is maybe good for some gaff, but its ackward for palming with my size of hand. |

Do some states have more or less than others? I've asked a friend in the states to keep an eye out for them but I guess the only way to get any is from collectors or banks?

Modern half dollars (the alloy coin) are like two dollar bills. They ARE still being printed/minted for circulation and people know they exist, but they see them so infrequently, they usually keep them if they get their hands on them (see hoarding). Once a year or so, I call around to a bunch of banks to see who has them and go in and "buy" them. What's really nice is you occasionally get some real silver half dollars (usually '64 Kennedys) in the mix.
If you are talking about some really nice silver Barber or Franklin halves then you should probably get them on eBay. Just find a trusted seller is all. You can go to pawn shops, coin shops or try finding a coin collector, but they usually aren't going to give you the selection or low price that you'll find online. I suggest buying a roll. I suggest if you haven't already done so, get four or five real silver half dollars with which to practice. Once you see the differences between silver and the modern alloy coins, I doubt you'll switch back. That being said, I do use the alloy coins to perform routines where the coin is abused more (Miser's Dream, Coin in Bottle, etc.) Joey D |
