Hi all, I'm relatively new to magic and this site.
Most of my left hand is paralyzed (hopefully temporarily) from an accident. Can anyone recommend any effects that are relatively easy to do and only require the use of one hand? (I'm right-handed, so as long as it only takes one hand, I'll be good.) Also, I would welcome any feedback on the first two effects I've recorded: https://vimeo.com/user14867869/videos I really haven't worked on my delivery at all, so constructive criticism won't be taken personally! Thanks in advance |

ElkMagic,
Believe it or not, you are going to find several magicians here on The Magic Café with only one arm or hand. Last September and October, I lost the use of my hands for a few days due to a drug reaction. The problem is one I can recognize. However, there are ways around it. Scheme! Hang in there and you'll meet people on The Magic Café that do overcome the handicap. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Hey, like Bob said, you're not the only one. Here is a clip of a semi-famous magician with NO HANDS:

This is so cool! I actually wasn't going to tie up people's attention here with it, but I sustained a "mallet finger" tendon injury last week, so I get to spend the next 8 weeks with one finger of my right hand (the right middle finger. How will I get by?) in a splint.
I had resolved myself to just studying theoretical stuff during that time, but now I will watch this thread for other suggestions. It is, by the way, really weird and amazing how thoroughly screwed up I feel losing the use of the tip of one finger. It doesn't seem like it's that much, but everything, writing with a pen, eating with a fork, everything, has to be restrategized. |

I heard an interview with a magician (sorry, don't remember who it was) who lost the use of an arm (broke it I think), and so he got into mentalism magic while he was healing.
But then when his arm healed, he didn't go back to sleights - he was doing so much better with mentalism than he had done with sleight of hand that he just stuck with that.

MagicPierre: hope you have a speedy recovery. My thumb, index finger, and middle finger on my left hand are virtually paralyzed, but I'd probably rather take that over any injury to my right hand.
danhughes: I LOVE mentalism and would love to specialize in that one day, but as a newbie I think I need to improve at patter and handling a crowd for just easy magic tricks first |

Here's the only routine I can think of that uses one hand:

G'day ElkMagic
I had a look at your videos. It seems that you have started to work out some ideas that will work for you. I expect with more practice and work on the presentation you will have some entertaining routines. I have some limitations with the use of my left hand and arm as a result of injuries over the years and have therefore had to consider what I can do to get around the resulting lack of ability to have full function. Note - my complications are minimal - but have still resulted in limitations. It is interesting that the 2 videos above are about the same card effect - this may be worth looking at. However I am sure that you will be able to come up with a great range of routines that will work for you. I am wondering what type of performance you are interested in - clearly mentalism may well work well for you. Off the top of my head I considered some of the things that I do in my shows and came up with a short list of things that may involve some problems in setting up but would be able to be performed using mostly the right hand only: Silk to cane, break away wand and rabbit production. I hope my reflections are of some value to you. I look forward to seeing what you work out. Bob Latta (aka Troppo Bob) |
