I don't think there is anyone here at the Café that feels any differently.

My heart sank when I over heard people talking about this during my job interview. My 2 year old daughter was with her grandmother, who lives less than a mile from the mall. I called frantically because she said she was taking her shopping over there. Thankfully they decided not to leave the house. I know several people who work or visit that mall daily.

One of the victims, Steve Forsyth was my good friend's kids basketball coach. My heart goes out to the victims families, what a terrible tragedy.

I can't believe I didn't hear about this until today. My ex-wife (who I'm still really good friends with) lives there.

I performed at the killers old High School a few years ago. Not sure if he was a student then, but it is quite eerie. Him and Aaron lived in the same town, and just a few miles away from me.

Fox didn't show my favorite show, Raising Hope, because of this.

Ever notice that your "heart goes out" a lot more these days? What is happening to the world??

What's happening is that we have much more information about things that happen all over the world than we had at any time in the past. If you turn off the television and stop reading the tabloids, you will find that things return to normal fairly quickly.

Yes, I saw that when I was out at lunchtime.
My point is, that incidents like this can be documented going back a hundred years or more. They were less sensationalized back in the day. Of course everything was less sensationalized. But the impression that murders are up is a false impression. |

Just reported: 27 dead in a shoot out at an elementary school in Ct, including 18 children.
An elementary school! The shooter was a father of one of the children at the school. |

I'm not sure that has anything to do with what is being discussed in this thread (which is more along the lines of mass killings in schools / malls). From what I've seen and experienced, I suspect that the latter have become far more common (even adjusting for population size) over the last few decades ... And I am not convinced that mass killings were less reported in the past than they are now. Certainly, if one happened back then it was still reported by most all the media of the day. Back then, a mass shooting was almost a national tragedy ... Now they are mostly forgotten within a day or two.

I'm thinking of Bath, Michigan, 1927 for example. Here are some more recent numbers from the Wikipedia:

1992–1993 (44 Homicides and 55 Deaths resulting from school shootings in the U.S.) |

Woland, you cite one example from 1927 then nothing until 1992. That sort of illustrates my point right there.
I already said "I suspect that the [mass school / mall killings] have become far more common (even adjusting for population size) over the last few decades" ... What are the stats for the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, leading into the 80s and 90s when the numbers seem to have taken off?

Today is not the day to start a discussion about gun violence in the USA.
Yesterday was. Or the day before. Or the week before. Or the month before. Or years ago. This is insane. And possibly, no- definately- so was the perpetrator. So, what are we going to do about this?
