I love cigarette magic! I used to perform it impromptu and close-up back when smoking was cool. But the attitude toward and laws regulating smoking have profoundly changed over the years. I gave up performing my cigarette routines back in the late '80's. I think cigarette tricks are acceptable if you're hanging out primarily with adults, including adults who smoke or who are tolerant of smokers. I don't thing they're appropriate around children and non-smokers. So I think they are out of place in a family show. Some street shows have big family audiences, some have audiences which are much more adult in composition. I think cigarette magic is OK for the one but not the other. Personally, I wouldn't invest time developing a killer cigarette routine which you could only use in limited circumstances and for which the venues where you can perform it will only continue to shrink and disappear, at least in the U.S.

Many sigarette moves can be altered to do it with short pencils or chalk. you don't have to smoke it, you can but I won't suggest you do that.
I see that in the usa there is a hostile attitude against smokers. so I would invest my time not in sigarette magic but in pencil magic. |

My idea of a magic/street show should not be all lollipops and pink posies. I want my show to shock and offend people. that's real art as far as I'm concerned. Most magic shows don't have that emotion of shock, offended, disgust. If they did then your really playing with emotions. For me that's what this biz is all about. Feelings. And getting paid.

I have seen Nick do his show, and it is great. It's funny as hell, his cigarette routine is simple, smooth and very magical. I did not find one thing he did to be offensive, and I doubt anyone watching did either. He was tastefully edgy, and everyone ate it up. The crowed cheered, laughed, and thanked him by giving his hat a lot love. Even after offering a drag of his lit cigarette to a toddler. (written down that sounds horrible, but when you see it, its comedic genius) I however could not pull that off.
His comedy is that of silent film area, pantomime, facial expressions, gestures, and music say everything, so he does not have to speak. His routine is not a few magic tricks, its live theatre. Every magician talks about how magic is an art, but nick is one of the few that I have actually see perform magic artistically; he is like the Arthur Trace of the streets. The thing is most people will not be able to experience the magic he shares. I have seen Jeff Hobson, James Deimere, Brett Daniels, Rick Wilcox, Paul Lee, and other big illusionist, as well as Nathan Kranzo, David Stone, Howard Hamburg, Chad Long, and Al Schneider perform live inches from my face, and they were all awesome and entertaining, but Nick’s show one of the few that actually felt Magical, even if you know how it’s all accomplished. He is a true pro, and I hate him for being so *** entertaining. And I hate him for being so *** nice.

GREAT discussion here lads. Thank you everybody for your inputs and thoughts. It's really given me lots and lots to think about and consider. Keep it coming.
I PM'd Max asking him about his experiences with cigs. We ended up talking on the phone today for about a hour as is he is here (germany) at the moment performing at Christmas Markets and all. He said he'd pop in here when he got a chance. Some great/interesting stories on cigs but I'll let him tell them. As for me I'm playing around now with cigs and pencils (thank you Robert ) Now about razor & needle swallowing.......LOL |
