I was wondering if a stripper deck is necessary or recommended for a novice? Will there be a huge difference in learning time if I used a regular pack of cards? Thank you for your advice/opinions!

Necessary? Not at all.
As with any gaffed deck, you don't want to over use it. Use a regular deck then switch in the gaff, then switch back to a regular deck. Stripper's are a great tool but I don't think they should be a substitute for learning and using sleight's. Use them to compliment your effects. Just my opinion. Iven

If your new to stripper decks, I would suggest getting Daryl's Essentials Stripper Deck DVD.

Something frequently overlooked when talking about 'trick' decks is that they really do not substitute for the ability to simply "handle" cards properly whether you do sleights or not. The irony is this: The better you handle a regular deck of cards the better you will be able to handle a 'trick' deck in a manner that appears TOTALLY NORMAL, etc.
For instance the level of skill you would have once you finished my DVD the 'Basics of Expert Card Magic', or the first book in the Card College series by Giobbi. What you need is a basic 'skill set' from which to select a logical course of study into the future. Best,

Great advice and thank you Burt. That was my line of thinking as well, until I began coming across so many different card decks being marketed and some doubts began to form. I will stick with a regular card deck while mastering my basic skills. I will also have a look at your DVD. I prefer books, but in some cases I can see where watching would clarify things.

My opinion? Read my books - then you won't need ANY gaffed decks. Work with borrowed decks only. HL.

All good advice above! I use a stripper deck a lot, even when doing routines that don't require it. I feel it gives you an extra piece of magic when you need or want it. Once you get the feel of making your own stripper deck it costs almost nothing extra. I encourage getting Mr. Lorayne's books, and his DVD's are brimming with good stuff. He has also been gracious to autograph if you buy them from him and ask. good luck!

You would be surprised how many pros who can make regular deck of cards sing and dance, don't take chances in a paying show and use a gimmicked deck.

As a general rule I much prefer material I can do with a regular and preferably borrowed deck of cards. But, I have never seen any ungaffed version of Invisible Deck that even comes close to the original. It's not the use of 'gimmicked' decks that are the problem it's the 'judicious' use of them.
And, again, IF you are going to use a 'trick' deck the use thereof should exactly mirror the manner in which you commonly use a regular deck of cards. That's the biggest and most common mistake made. A magician will be working along just fine and suddenly he'll be handling the deck as if it's made of tissue paper, etc. It's a huge 'tell' that the deck is not the one used just a moment ago. You see this quite frequently with various Rising Card decks, because of the manner in which they are made and function. Best,
Brad Burt
