Greg,
Again, your shadow ideas are brilliant! Do you use music and staging for all this? I could see this as a whole piece of conceptual theater art! And I bet you don't charge as much as Blue Man Group, either!

This is actually one of the best threads I have seen for a long time.
Even Though I own the Cesaral, my PK is on it's way from Hocus Pocus at this moment. Just like David, I'll go through all the suggest routines. It's going to be fun Sven

No I don't use music. I use music in my multiphase routine because it adds humor... the song is Pressure by Billy Joel and in that routine I'm blindfolded and trying to duplicate a picture that someone secretly drew, trying to figure out what cards are in the hands of two spectators after the deck was shuffled, popping cups on the table and not trying to hit the one that has a large shard of glass under it... and trying not get my finger cut off in my Axe Roulette. I think that's a little pressure.
I did forget to mention another effect in my shadow routine. I didn't think it would go over as well as it did, but everyone spoke about it afterwards. On my stage near one of the walls and towards the back, I had a TV tray table set up with children's building blocks... various shapes and sizes and heights. Even though I moved around the stage throughout the show the blocks never fell.. and I thought they might. In the shadow routine I have the person that I did the PK touches to walk over to the table and examine it to make sure there are no connections or gimmicks. We then march heavily on the stage near the table to prove that those vibrations won't knock anything down... again I thought they might. I have the person go back to their seat then point a light at the tray which causes a shadow of the tray and blocks on the back wall. I walk to the back wall, which is about 12 feet away, and grab the shadow. I lift up on the shadow and the blocks come tumbling down. I'm sure someone could do those variious effects to music, but, in general, I wanted to do a show that didn't seem like a show... just a series of experiments. Even the music I used for the multiphase was given a reason.. which I won't go into now. Greg

Is this pen the same as the Bic pen put out by Steve Ducheck back in the early 80's? The effect was the same, after a slight time delay the bic pen fell off the edge of a table, or from leaning on a glass, etc..
It was based on the method used for a piece of wood falling. |

Ah yes, it WAS a Dusheck pen that I had. It worked great, seemed indetectable and even wrote. Ducheck is really a creative genius - I liked his Wonderbar and Dancing Hank Matilda (now re-issued by Tenyo), and "Well Healed" where you seal a large "hole" in a card - one of the very cleverist (and simple) pocket illusions I've seen.

Because of his name, and other pen related magic products he was releasing at the time, Steve Ducheck marketed the "Tip Pen" for inventor Larry White (I believe). The Tip Pen and PK Pen have identical methods although are just slightly different in manufacture. Both pens were developed independently around the same time, and were marketed with friendly understanding between the two inventors.

Just for the record, Banachek independently developed his own PK Pen without knowing the gaffus used by Larry White. Banachek prepared his pen for use in his performances, but after repeated requests for him to release it and after learning that Larry White was no longer manufacturing or selling his pens (after he sold nearly 10,000 units over the years and thinking that the demand had ebbed), Banachek released his pen to the magic fraternity. Larry's pen is/was unique and our intent was never to inhibit his sales or take anyone's ideas without permission. Larry White is an incredibly creative thinker and creator and has many other ideas on the market and several that he has given to the magic fraternity. At this point, Banachek's PK Pen is the only one of its type at this price on the market.

MagicInspirations is where I got mine. I have no complaints. I'm very happy with what I got. I would encourage anyone else buying PK Pen or other Banachek effects to buy from there. I'm still creating a few new presentational techniques with the pen, including one that seems very promising that got me a surprising reaction. I'll share it with all of you once I finish developing the whole presentation (if it's as good as I hope that it is )

Received it today. I had the same problems Dane was having with it. I am not sure if this effect is for me though. I'm still testing it. It looks good and I'm still learning placements, just don't know if it will be part of my act just yet.

David,
Give it a little time, practice, thought, and I'm sure you'll come around the same way I did. At first it just seems like it might not be all that special. But once you think some presentations through, and practice, and get the timing and placements right, then there are limitless possibilities. Remember, you can always do the same kind of PK tricks that you do with other ordinary pens, impromptu, or with props (like I do with my IT setup). And then once you have got your audience in the proper mindframe, you hit them with the real effect. It takes some building up. It doesn't work nearly as well if you move from one part of your act that is unrelated, and then say, ok now I'll make this pen fall off the edge of the table using my mind. I think you understand what I mean. Once I started framing some good presentations in my mind, they just kept storming in. Anyway, hope you stick with it, and find it as useful as I do. Best Wishes, Dane |

K, I found the balance point of my pen. All is well now. Plus the little bit of patter about physics and how objects that are stable on a surface can't just "fall" makes this an even better effect.

I have Banachek's Pen and the Perplexing Pen. The Banachek Pen and his utensil bending video are wonderful. I do the pen effect using one of those plastic bottles tinted orange that prescriptions come in. The nonsafety cap is very flat and slippery, with a slightly beveled edge. Using the Perplexing Pen: I put the pen on the bottle cap and get the three movements described earlier in this thread - very nice. Not sure the three movements would occur with the Banachek Pen although they might. With the Perplexing Pen, the weight shift is such that the pen first tilts and gets held up by the clip used to attach the pen in a shirt pocket. This causes three separate movements.

Glad to hear all is well. I agree about the physics patter. I use it ALL the time when people tell me "well it was going to fall anyway, being that close to the edge". I just tell them that line about physics and gravity. Puts them all to rest Now just think through some presentations, and you'll undoubtedly find great use for the pen.

Dane, I also found that placing the pen on a book with a nice smooth dustjacket makes it fall like in the video on dreamlandmagic.com, with the horizontal movement I mean. I tried it out yesterday and it looked almost identical.

Dane (and everybody else...)
I have read most of the wonderful threads (and tips) here but didn't see the following, and this is the way I present my pk effect... I place my pen on top of the opening of a tall glass. This way it seems proportionally balanced and no-one thinks about the "well, eventually it would fall anyway" issue. It also is easier to see that there is nothing attached to the pen. And another thing: I performed this for a small group bout fifteen people at a party once. After the 'set-up', I put the pen down and began to concentrate (and counting off the seconds in my mind). I reached the moment it should have tipped, braced myself... and then nothing - the pen stayed right there, no movement. I picked the pen up a little while later, feigned fatigue, and said I would give it one more shot. Of course the tension was now very high as this was my closing effect, and everybody could sense my embarrasment as nothing was happening (and I did not tell them what was going to happen either - I simply asked them to watch very carefully as I extended my hands and stood very still - no gestures were made, meaning that there was no way that the pen could be pulled or pushed in any way). So with tension high, I set the pen to fall at the 'longest time', and when it did there was an audible gasp from the audience. Just my experience thus far... Jo |

Got my PK Pen today
It looks great, and I actually hate myself for using that much money on the Cecaral Pen without trying out the PK pen. PK Pen is much easier to operate and far more reliable. The effect is as good as Cecaral Pen Sven

Wow Jo...
Brilliant idea for the balancing act. I like the suggestion a lot, and will definatley give that a try. I can see how that will take away from the notion of balance. My brother-in-law actually suspected the ink was running down in the pen when it was balanced on edge. You get a wise guy in every bunch, I tell you J |

Sorry to dredge up a year old thread...but there are some GREAT presentational ideas here! I'll be receiving my PK pen soon as well.
One thing I thought of, sparked by the 'physics' explanation: tell the audience that an object on the edge of a table that is about to fall, will fall immediately (demonstrate) - unless it is held in place by an opposing force (this time do the real work). And it will stay there until the opposing force (your mental effort) is relaxed or drained (and now it falls). Do you think that this 'inverse' pk is less effective than the 'active force' original version? |

Thanks for finding this thread. Gregs shadow presentation is killer. BTW Bob Cassidy has another killer routine for the PK pen,I'm surprized it did'nt show up in this thread. He gives the spec a choice of which pen...nuff said. |
