I use the shadow effect in close up settings.
As a lead in I usually describe the feeling we all get like that of somebody watching you or that feeling you get when there is someone behind you. I elaborate on this and move on to perform the pen routine using a shadow of my hand as symbol for how our presence can influence objects despite a lack of contact or even at a considerable distance. I strongly imply a form of connection between my hand and the pen. If anyone looks for a practical rationale it is usually this connection in a physical form...but of course find nothing.

Tom -
Nice, I like that a lot. Reminds me of how my friend characterized the Twilight Zone: 'That show connected with audiences and freaked them out, because there was always that one hook, some odd thing that pops up every once in a while in normal life, that we all have experienced and quite can't explain. So it grabs you and makes you wonder if it *might* be real.' Same with the shadow thing. I'm quite skeptical of popular paranormal phenomena, but there have been a few times when I've felt the hairs on the back of my neck tingle, and lo and behold, there was someone there. Could possibly be that I subconsciously register someone's presence via the sound sound of boards creaking, etc. But thanks! that's a great presentational idea. Can't wait to perform this. Update: Jan 14 2005 I finally received my pk pen today! It's great. What I was wondering was, do you guys time it internally? Because it seems like it would have a much more eerie and believable effect if you made some physical motion that was timed with the falling of the pen. I can reliably set it so it falls down in 10-12 secondss (counted in my head), but it's a little short on time. Anything longer is kind of a crapshoot. So do you guys just get into 'pk concentration' mode with a scrunched up face and let it happen when it may? Or have you just practice a *long* time and are able to time it at will... Thanks! maurice |

Well, I have one and love it. The only problem is if it falls off too soon, then it fails to deliver the desired effect. Oh well. Hh yeah, I have had problems doing this on tables with tableclothes, so beware!

I would set it, and notice where the lettering is in the words on the pen. Time it is this position...If it is too short, move it one letter then time it again. Find a position that works for you. Make a secret mark on the pen so you know where to set it if it does not fall upon a letter in the words.

Right, that's what they explain in the directions too. I just wasn't quite sure if that was reliable enough to try to use 'motions' that are timed, rather than looking for the first signs of rocking. What do the rest of you guys do?

You can talk while in PK position until you see the movement start and then change your inflection, etc. Bob Cassidy has some very nice handling and routining on the pens. He also has a high opinion of the Banachek version.

I see. Thanks for the info. Does he market it? (the Cassidy routine) ... or if not, any tips on where I can find it?
The banachek one you're referring to, I assume, is the one on Vol.4 of Psi Series... maurice |

The Banachek PK Pen sounds very good. As I always like the PK effect, I really intend to order a set for me. But before it, I have one question, I own the Psychokinetic Pen (from Stevens Magic)Big brand model. Is that the same principal? Or should I still have the Banachek Pen. Please advice me.
Thanks. |

I tried doing the " put the letter and see how much time it takes to fall" technique, but it seems that every time it falls at different times ( 25 sec, 40 sec, 10 sec, 1 min!, etc)
I do prep the pen the same amount of time, place it on the same table at the same place and position, and in the same letter every time. Anyone have ideas as to why? Or how can one get a better idea as to the timing of it--- I was hoping to place it on the table and know the time it would take to fall so I can put my patter accordingly.

I saw Banachek use the pen in acollege show last year. It was placed in his program after he had done some marvelous performing. By the time he got to the use the pen he had everyone believing. I have the pen and it works great. Murf

Thanks for the tip, RH. Does he sell his version, or does he detail a 'mod' for it?
Thanks, maurice |

The Banachek pen is available from Banachek probably and also most magic dealers. There are a few different pens out there but I think most do stock the Banachek one. The internet dealers certainly do.
Cassidy doesn't change the pen any. He simply has built a nice routine around it in the ebook mentioned above. He doesn't seem to be offering that ebook at the moment but he does re-release items on a regular basis.

Nice thread,
some notes about spectators thoughts by the way: in a show where a friend did the Banachek pen, people were to commend the show and the effects (also friends, to get feedback for new things we've done for them) some said that it was strange/eerie but most of them acted like: there has to be a kind of liquid or something that needs time to run from one edge to the other to make the pen fall off the table. eventhough it was presented similar to the description of jo what seemed to be the best way to do the pk pen for this group of 20 specs... I often use a sharpie for my regular stuff and was wondering, if the Banachek/Dela PK-Sharpie is also available in stores here in germany. Does anyone know something about it? thanx, s.h. |

I really don't see this pen as being a trick that is anything to write home about. It seems as if there is a windup apparatus inside. And when Criss Angel performed it in his TV show, it really did not go as planned. He seem to be calm and telling the audience to concentrate on the pen, and then when people started to discuss it, he starts yelling and really pushing them to concentrate, then the pen moves. Big deal. Make it move on command, and more than once!!!! Really cheesey -
And then Criss tries it again and breaks the glass it was resting in. Of all of the tricks, this one is not worth calling magic. Just my opinion and, for what it is worth, everyone that saw it that I know, also assumed that there is something in the pen. |
