I have used canvas strips and glued them in whenever I have the need to have a hinge requirement in a tight spot like the Dagger Chest. These literally last for years and are strong enough to withstand vertical stresses of swing doors and such as well.

The interior of a head chest should be colorful, not black. That is the reason the mirror is used. Otherwise you could just put a black board in there. A mirror box should actually have strips or pinstriping to give it a depth. You must make sure how the line are running. I made mine with bright stripped material and sprayed Scotch Gard on it. One for dirt the other greasy heads. Material can be applied with a 50/50 mixture of white glue and water.
You are not building a Square Circle, but a mirror box. Bill

Bill is absolutely right. Stripes are great but I opted for a marble-like textured finish on the inside. This provided for a good contrast with the outside art design (which is an industrial finished look). This combination gives it an overall classy expensive look.

When building a mirror box with stripes, it is very effective as long as the mirrors on their hinges are absolutley true and the stripes are straight. I remember, years back, building a miniature arabian tent with stripes. Until I monkeyed with it, the stripes had this very odd "lean" which ended up being the mirrors just a bit off straight where there were hinged. Moving them a bit in or out at the top can be required. Once it is correct, it looks very good but it is more complex than having the mirrors reflect a plain or, say, floral pattern fabric.

If built correctly, the mirrors will reflect the sides of the inside of the box. As a result, in theory at least, no one should be able to see anything, nor should there be a telltale reflection, other than the insides of the box.
That said: Outdoors can provide light that makes things visible that normally would not be. Personally, I believe, and it would apply outdoors, that the hardest part to hide, is the "V" on the floor of the box...lesser so the same issue at the top. People try to hide this in a number of ways...busy patterns, stripes on the bottom that go the same angle, some illusionists, Bill Neff for one, paint an X at the top and bottom which hides/masks with the big symbol the edge of this type of gimmick. So, in answer to your question, I could see this edge being more prominent outside. The angle at which people are viewing is a consideration on this too. If they are low, they may see the top edge, if they are higher they will see the lower. If they are exactly in the center, they may see nothing but exactly what they should see. There could be some matters like this but if the alternative is black art, I would go with the reflection. I feel that a dagger box using black art flaps is not much of a trick no matter where you do it. I think almost everyone would figure it out or feel something fishy. quack |

I'm going to go a little off topic here (from specifically focusing on the Dagger Head Chest) to suggest that anyone who is interested in building this type of effect (not using BA , but the other) take a look at this link and bookmark the page for reference :

Notice the subtle striping of the interior material . (W.B. also adds a terrific subtlety from a U.F. Grant idea , at least I first saw it described in one of Grant's illusion manuscripts) Another good looking one is currently on Kenna Thompson's web site , but will eventually disappear if it is sold , so take a look now (April 24 ,2004 ) . Interestingly the one pictured here uses a dark interior with no stripes and it looks good . I have to say that I was highly unimpressed with the dagger chests on the above two mentioned sites. Does anyone remember that special on TV with the sword box that used neon light swords? That box was tiny and looked like it barely fit the girl. If a box is that big and the base looks that thick there's really no point in doing the *** illusion at all IMHO.
