We were out at Le Gavroche tonight: my brother's 40th.
Wow! For those outside Europe, it is a restaurant in central London, set up by the Roux brothers, and carried on by the son/nephew, Michel Roux Jr. Wow! I am an obsessive and scientific cook, and I love Michel Roux Jr. This was precise, beautifully flavoured, exquisitely presented food that you actually want to eat. Wow! I have eaten in (usually on gigs) many fantastic, famous restaurants. This was better. Maybe it was to do with being a customer, for a change. And I was allowed to order the lobster, or filet steak, etc. But I didn't. 1) Amuse Bouche: curried something-or-other in a tiny filo case, feather-weight cheese twist. 2) Scallops in 'black curry' with tiger prawn. 3) Amuse Bouche: Rabbit terrine with most gorgeous bread rolls and freshly churned butter. 4) Pheasant with truffle risotto. This was between two: a waitress brought us a case of fresh black truffles; we chose one, and it was shaved over the risotto. The black truffle was perfect in this case, as it did not overpower the pheasant, just added its beautiful, musky flavour to the dish. I love white truffle, but it has to be the star of its own show. 5) Bitter chocolate and praline desert with gold leaf. Yes, Café, I ate gold tonight. Sorry about that. 6) Coffee followed by Armagnac x 2. Yes, I missed out the cheese. But f*** me, it was good. Thoroughly recommend this place, although it will cost you a third mortgage. The atmosphere is great: the waiting staff steer the fine line between friendly and attentive, and there is that little touch of theatre that we, as performers, appreciate. A great evening, I am blessed to have such a strong relationship with my brother, after all these years. As we say in my part of the world: he is a good bloke [trans.- I love him very much]. I gave him a signed first edition, which he will open on Tuesday, but his extra present was a VF Silver Crown, 1893. I did a ***ised version of Michael Vincent's single coin production, then gave him a document with all the weird and wonderful stuff that happened in 1893. He was quite chuffed, as we say. Some of my best eating experiences have been in little shacks, in the middle of nowhere. I couldn't lie, though, out of a sense of inverse snobbery, and claim this was anything less than fantastic. My daytime career afforded me opportunities to dine my way around the world and here's one of my favorites if you're ever in the Maastricht region in The Netherlands. I have numerous world favorites, but this comes immediately to mind without a second thought.

Reminds me of a dinner I had with my brother at Le Train Bleu in the Gare de Lyon in 1978. We ordered things that required a bit of preparation and performance at the table, as you did. Enjoyed a very good St Emilion Grand Cru.
