Here's Dick's intro:
"Dick Oslund has been "around" a long time! (Some say: "too long")--Hee Hee! He did his first professional show at age 13 on October 24,1945. He made $25! (grossly overpaid!)"Except for Navy & College and a few years as an executive for the BSA, he has been a full time pro. (part time pro.in Navy, college and BSA) He made enough money doing shows while in Navy, that he never had to cash a Navy pay check! He "specialized" in school shows (about 20,000)but like any professional, he took "whatever came along" (shopping malls, club dates, hospitality rooms, corporate banquets, even a FEW trade shows, ETC.)In his late teen years,he did magic and fire eating in side shows. Years later,in summers, he managed carny side shows (GIRL TO GORILLA) and a PIG RACING SHOW. He also booked phone promotion shows (KRAMIEN, CONKLIN,and his own small illusion show.--He also managed the phone rooms for these dates. For a few seasons, he booked and promoted Franzen Bros. Circus and Circus Girard. --Oh. he also fronted Dailey Bros. Circus. --And,he put on a "face" and wore big shoes and a red nose with Franzen! He has lectured for magic clubs across the US (one in Canada!)Abbott's (twice)the SAM Nat'l Convention in 78,and the Magic Castle twice. Also worked the Castle for a week.--and to steal Jay Marshall's line: "When I can afford it,I'll work it again!" For about ten years he was a "regular inhabitant" of the "Charlie Miller Suite" at Magic Inc. While "there" he contributed to "KID STUFF FIVE" and the "SUCCESS BOOK". He also served as an advisor to the publishing of Martin Gardner's "ENCYCLOPEDIA OF IMPROMPTU MAGIC".--And he helped out behind the counter, too. He has mentored several young men who are full time pros. He is a 62 year member of IBM, a 37 year member of SAM, a 37 year member of the SHOWMEN'S LEAGUE and a member of the SECRET SIX~~~(membership #6 7/8). Now retired (at last, his friends say!)he accepts occasional spot dates. At Jon Racherbaumer's urging, he is writing a book about his "adventures" playing the "knowledge boxes on the kerosene lamp circuit". Jon "threatened" to never show him another card trick, if he didn't start writing. (oops--a split infinitive) That's enough about Dick Oslund (it's about time!!!) --He still enjoys a good discussion about the business. "...DOWN THE ROAD!" Dick " We are VERY FORTUNATE to have Dick here as a member and posting to The Magic Café. His knowledge of performing Magic, especially for kids, is pricless! Welcome Dick! |

Dick, Hope you're reading this..
I remember when I attended one of your first lectures and came away with the 50 cent piece on the elastic tied to my belt loop, OMG that played for years everywhere I performed. I thank you for everything you shared with us that night..I still have those lecture notes with you on the cover, great stuff!!!! Bill |

Dick:
I remember attending several of your programs in the Northern Indiana area while trying to find my place in this crazy world of Magic. I was in my 20s at the time. You were a very positive influence. Thank you and God Bless you!
STILL In HIS service

Funny(?) story> my husband mentioned he remembers a magic week-end in Chicago where he happened to meet you in the men's room. You gave him better advice in a short five minute (or less) conversation than he had gleaned from the entire week-end of lectures from a raft of other "Pros".
You have most assuredly had a positive effect on more active magicians than you can imagine AND you're still going strong. Congratulations! Julie |

I've chatted with Dick in some of the forums here and I just found this thread. Dick is a really, really, nice guy. Thanks for the photo Dick!
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I would agree. Every one of Dick's posts that I have read have been helpful.
Although I have never had the pleasure of actually meeting Dick, we have email chatted on several occasions. We also live in the same state...although MANY hours apart. I hope to be able to meet up with him personally one day...just to shake the man's hand and thank him personally.

Dick used to come every year and visit me at the St Joseph's Fair in Mi. I always learned something from him. I miss those days.
If you look at any of Dick's posts, they are informative as heck, no "holier than thou" attitudes, and are wonderful. I wish all members (I won't name names)would be more like Dick in posting here at the Café. Thanks for taking your time out to share! Regards, Jef

Hey Danny!
Thanks for being here on the Café! Great to have top performers and lecturers here to provide their vast experience and knowledge with all of us. Dick and I just chatted about your 3-DVD set! Dick has been an incredible help to me professionally. I call him my "artistic director" (we have never met... ) His ideas and gentle warnings have been invaluable to me, and to countless others.
