If The 13 Steps is the Bible of Mentalism then wouldn't READINGS be his Great Commission?

After reading a recent post by my friend David Thiel http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=82 I've decided to let you know what I've been up to for the last 4 years or so concerning what I consider to be the Great Commission of Mentalism. I studied counseling in college but I only worked a short time in that field. I became a full time musician at 22 and never looked back until I began studying mentalism and readings in particular. I saw the resounding similarities between what a professional counselor does and what the earliest books on readings were recommending. I was interested in what Orson Wells had to say.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjPsnfysrp8 about being a "Shut Eye" and it being a occupational disease. It was quite interesting.

Through all of my studies I've come up with something many in the Bizarre community have approved of and I'll be sharing with the rest of you. I've bounced it off of 5 or 6 notable figures here on the Café and I'll ask them to contribute their two cents once I'm ready to market what has been a labor of love. I think it may help those of you on your path.

No.

Since Corina hasn't be resurrected and never instructed anyone to spread his teachings to the world, I don't think the analogy works.

For those not familiar with the meaning of Great Commission, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Commission

What therapists have - 4 years of training...solo and group therapy sessions on a weekly basis, constant monitoring and testing, 400 hours out in the field (working for free) again being monitored by experienced therapists...

what some readers have - their own life experience and an oracle

Doing readings would be analogous doing service or ministry.

Evangelistic Corindans handing out tracts and converting some heathens to mentalism would be more analogous to the Great Commission!!

Exactly. But why would Corinda have wanted to teach mentalism to the world?

I think Slim was just using hyperbole to suggest that the section on cold reading was the most important part of the 13 Steps. The problem is that there are far better and more up to date resources available.

Ooohhh, apocalyptic hyperbole.

I'm glad you agree. Of course I've never suggested that corinda has risen from the dead. I certainly didn't say that. But he does seem to infer that the road of mentalism symbolically ends up in a gypsy tent doing psychic readings😈😈😈 I honestly think Al Mann would agree.

I think he makes it plain to aspire to Readings. Al Mamm also says the same thing in a different way.

You do understand what the Great Commission was, right?

Have you read what Corinda wrote about ethics? How does that comport with the idea that the road to mentalism leads to doing Gypsy style tent readings?

Actually...why are we bothering yet again?

i know its because we think that threads like this do nothing positive for this place, and that it lowers the IQ of mentalism by several points...

(for people who don't know, please just take a look through slim's posts)

and we can move onto something else instead?

Perhaps you should reread what was written.

I agree with David Thiel. Readings are powerful. Many mentalist who immerse themselves totally into the craft come to the same conclusion. I'm glad it is so.

In "Behind the Scenes with the Mediums" Abbot says that the medium culture at the time considered readings to be the essential skill and that the tricks were just promotional to get interest and generate business. But of course those were phony mediums. Though mentalism certainly descended from that world, I don't that's where it's heading back to. In fact readings as performance art IMO is a more elevated form than the gypsy tent with it's subtle cons...

While Slim's Scripture/Commission analogy is nowhere close enough to being a parallel case to repeat, one (oft-stated) point is worth taking away: Telling people stuff about themselves is one feature that makes Mentalism distinctive from Magic and, as Bob explains in his work on "Side Effects," can add enormously to the audience's experience of a performance.

I would like to take a moment of silence in appreciation of all the good thoughts Slim has brought--sometimes stirring up the cauldron to get the good things off the bottom, sometimes playing the devil's advocate to get the good players off the benches. [Sorry for the mixed metaphors as I should be sticking to religious symbolism.]
