Which of the below would you prefer only one,
1. An amazingly entertaining routine that is weak in magic 2. A routine that is exactly as entertaining as above but also strong in magic content and baffling 3. A routine that is strong in magic but not very entertaining 4. A routine that is not entertaining and not strong in magic Phil |

Do you mean which we will pay to watch? Or by being a parent, which type would we prefer our child to watch? Or which way we would prefer to entertain with if we had no choice?

I have been doing a shopping centre gig where they have a balloon modeller as well as me, so I've been asked not to do balloon modelling as part of my set. So I've been doing all the gags about blowing up the balloon and forgetting to tie the knot etc etc, but then just finishing with the balloon bursting and not making anything. It's been a fun thing to do.
I quite like the idea of doing the whole performance in a similar way. You don't really do anything, just the build up, but not actually doing juggling, magic or balloons. I think it could be fun to try and a challenge to my clowning/comedy skills. |

A very weird question but I think I know what you are getting at.
If a routine was purely entertaining would you prefer that routine over a routine that was purely magical. I think that's what you mean.....but there's no reason you can't always have both |

I too find the choices odd but truth be told I have a few of each in my shows
for instance- when I perform at early learning centers several of my tricks are heavy on the journey not the magic. meaning the fun that is had up until the moment of magic. it is quite entertaining while the magic is not that strong. that's ok as my job is to ENTERTAIN my audience. I also have some routines that are both entertaining and heavy on the magic. such as my opening routine with canes, doves, silks, and more happening over the course of the 3 minutes of the performance. it has the wow factor. so in reality which one do I prefer--it is for me a mixed bag. I like to have an assortment of affects in my show. it also depends on the audience. for kids I think I am more focused on the entertainment factor and not so much the strong magic factor. with adults I would want both which is your option #2. sam

It all depends on what show I am presenting. For some programs I try to do as little magic as possible so 1 is an option. In the case of 4 you may be trying to get a message across and if it is too entertaining your audience may not actually be able to receive the message because they are enjoying them selves too much and not actually listening.

I was discussing a lecturer I'd seen at a convention, with someone who knew him personally. He assured me that the guy was really a great kids' entertainer, but didn't see why he should give away his good material to all on sundry (although, I kinda thought that was the point). Apparently this chap begrudgingly agrees to lecture, as long as the fees are high...but when he does so, he troops out some old nonsense, which he never actually uses, and makes sure to include a BOR sales plug, for items needed for the routine. John Cage said "Everything we do is music"....but also, I believe "everything we do is magic". A truly great magician might learn a lot from this legendary John Cage work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTEFKFiXSx4 |

Option 1 for me, or option 2. As entertainment value trumps all else for me, I am quite happy with one. Strong magic content is not a priority at all.

I think that the entertainment value is the most important - if there is strong magic as well - even better
